I anticipate the loss of 2-3 linebackers (LBs) following the 2021 season, so LSU will need to replenish these spots by way of the 2022 recruiting class or the transfer portal (yet again). I’m confident that coach ‘O’ prefers to have the vacated LB positions filled with outside linebackers (OLBs) as opposed to inside backers (ILBs). In regard to the 2022 recruiting class, linebacker may be one of the tougher positions for ‘O’ and Blake Baker because of the following:

Limited in-state (LA) talent – The LA crop of 2022 prospects, as a whole, is really talented (and deep). However, the linebacker position is thin, with only two (2) true LBs rated in the 247Sports Composite top-500 – (i) Kailep Edwards, ILB from Edgard, LA, and (ii) Javae Gilmore, OLB from Amite, LA (unfortunately, LSU doesn’t have the best track record w/ kids from Amite)

Limited success recruiting OLBs in recent past – We’ve had to access the transfer portal to sign OLBs in each of the past two years. We’ve been able to land plenty of quality ILBs but have struggled signing outside backers with good lateral movement (sideline-to-sideline) that can cover in space. OLBs that we signed in the 2020-2021 classes include Phillip Webb and Xavier Carter, and these guys seemingly project more as DEs. Really need to get this fixed so that we aren’t dependent on annual transfers (w/ 1-2 yr. eligibility).

Below are my notes accumulated on top LB targets for the recruiting class of 2022.

Harold Perkins (OLB, 5*, #19, Cypress, TX) – originally from Louisiana, H. Perkins now lives in the suburb of Houston, TX known as Cypress. He’s the highest-rated LB by 247sports Composite, and he’s being pursued by all the big boys in college football. There’s some smoke surrounding Texas A&M, but that may be based on their recent success in the Houston-area, in general (as opposed to Perkins actual affinity or disdain for the Aggies).

Regardless of the other contenders, I’ve heard definitively that H. Perkins “likes LSU a lot” and that we’re in the hunt for his commitment. This is great news b/c outside of a second, elite OT (to pair w/ Will Campbell), Perkins may be the single most important target on our board. As such, it is imperative for Blake Baker to prioritize him and begin building that relationship immediately. With the proximity between Cypress and Baton Rouge, it shouldn’t be a problem to get Perkins on an OV once the dead period is finally lifted. And finally, if we can improve on the field and maybe even kick some Aggies arse in November, I believe we absolutely have a legitimate shot w/ H. Perkins.

Daniel Martin (OLB, 4*, #103, Marietta, GA) – from the same HS as Arik Gilbert and BJ Ojulari, Martin was so obviously talented that LSU offered him before Ojulari/Gilbert even graduated. There was some early buzz about Martin’s interest in the Tigers and that he would be keeping close tabs on LSU in 2020. Also read that this kid’s mother was “excited for the LSU offer”. Not surprisingly, however, his interest in the Tigers has cooled off, and all indications now point to Martin’s recruitment being a Clemson-Georgia battle. Don’t hold your breath on this kid.

Keaton Wade (OLB, 4*, #184, Spring Hill, TN) – LSU was included in K. Wade’s top-10 released earlier in February. However, the Tigers did not make the cut for his twin brother, Destin Wade, who is a dual-threat QB. This is a bit troubling because identical twins commonly attend college together, as they oftentimes have a very tight-knit bond.

I’m hoping attending the same university is not a mandatory prerequisite, because there’s been positive moment for Keaton – mainly, the fact that the Wade twins made an unofficial visit to campus back in March 2020. Interestingly, the final day of their visit coincided with the SEC announcing the halt to on-campus visits due to COVID-19. According to reports, the Wade twins and Fisher Anderson were able to see and do everything on their visit, including a tour of campus, locker room & football operations building. Furthermore, they were able to observe a spring football practice and meet with ‘O’ for a conversation & picture. By all accounts, the visit was a big success.

Things look really good with Keaton’s recruitment. The 4* prospect (No. 184 nationally, No. 22 positional) is listed at 6’4”, 223 lbs. and has received a total of 24 offers. This kid is a legit player that I’m hoping Austin Thomas can assist in pulling from out of Tennessee.

Travious Lathan (OLB, 4*, #314, Miami, FL) – one of the last offers issued by LSU in February, Lathan mentioned his latest offer from the Tigers as one that stands out (and that he wants to visit over the summer). T. Lathan is already familiar with Blake Baker, as he was recruiting him while DC at Miami. The 4* prospect (No. 314 nationally, No. 18 positional) is listed at 6’2”, 202 lbs. and has 19 offers with LSU, Miami, & Oregon currently the perceived leaders.

Leon Hart (OLB, 3*, #686, Miami, FL) – offered in April 2020, and he reported being “blown away with scholarship offer from the defending national champion” Corey Raymond is LSU’s Miami-area recruiter, and he’s already begun establishing a relationship with Hart. I would speculate that B. Baker is at least familiar with L. Hart from his Miami days, so it feels like LSU has a shot here. From the beginning, LSU has pitched the idea of Hart playing LB in the Tigers 4-3 scheme, and his feedback was that “fits him perfectly”. The interest from Leon definitely appears genuine, as he went on to say that his next step is visiting LSU’s campus in Baton Rouge. The 3* prospect (No. 686 nationally, No. 52 positional) is listed at 6’2”, 190 lbs., and he has 17 offers with LSU, Bama, Miami, Penn St., & South Carolina standing out the most.

Kip Lewis (OLB, 4*, #340, Carthage, TX) – The 3* prospect from northeast Texas (No. 340 nationally, No. 29 positional) is listed at 6’2”, 200 lbs., and he currently has 15 offers with the four or five biggest having been received by Lewis in late January 2021. According to K. Lewis, he doesn’t have any favorites yet, as he is just trying to research the numerous schools/programs that have offered. Lewis has mentioned that he’d like to commit before the start of his senior season (so, Aug./Sept. 2021). Kip mentioned that he has a twin sister, and that they would like to attend college together.

My gut instinct has me thinking that a kid from small-town Carthage (very rural area) would most likely end up on a campus relatively close to home. As such, I would think Lewis winds up at LSU, Oklahoma, Texas, or Texas A&M.

Javae Gilmore (OLB, 3*, #381, Amite, LA) – He is the lone, in-state LB to receive an LSU offer. This kid is a long, physical athlete (6’4”, 200 lbs.) with good ball-skills that he probably has picked up playing WR for the LA Bootleggers 7-on-7 team. J. Gilmore is currently a 3* prospect (No. 381 nationally, No. 35 positional) with 13 offers that include Bama, Arkansas, FSU, Ole Miss, & Miss St. It’s worth noting that Gilmore was reportedly “blown away” by the LSU offer, and Miss St. is another program “that has his attention”.

As I hinted at previously, LSU will have to overcome the “Amite issue”, and I really hope ‘O’ and Baker can close on Gilmore b/c I believe he’s a great player whose 247Comosite ranking will do nothing but rise over time.

Justin Medlock (ILB, 3*, #446, Manvel, TX) – the predominant sentiment is that Ohio St. leads for J. Medlock, but LSU is firmly in his top-4 along with the Buckeyes, Oklahoma & Oregon. Medlock resides in Manvel, Texas (suburb of Houston), so LSU is geographically the closest university to his hometown. When asked about his recruitment, Medlock stated that he wants to maintain an element of surprise about when he’ll commit (and, I suspect, who he’ll commit too), and he had an emphatic response to the question about his main criterion for making his decision as follows: “Wherever I can get on the field.” The 3* prospect (No. 446 nationally, No. 16 positional) is listed at 6’1”, 210 lbs. and has 27 offers.

Based on my interpretation of this recruitment, I suspect the three (3) contenders not named Ohio St. may be in better position than the “insiders” from Columbus would have us believe. We’ll see how things play out, but I believe LSU has a real shot for Medlock.

Jacoby Mathews (S, 5*, #32, Ponchatoula, LA) - a newly minted 5* (No. 32 nationally, No. 2 positional) per the 247sports update on 2/24/2021, J. Mathews narrowed his focus to a top-6 of LSU, Bama, Texas, Florida, Oklahoma, & Miss St. While the 6’1”, 216 lb. Louisiana native is listed as a safety, I believe Mathews’ combination of athleticism, ball skills, physicality and frame translate to him playing the outside linebacker position (ala, Demario Davis) following high school. As such, I’m including Jacoby with the linebacker targets – and let me just say that I would love to see Daronte Jones be creative in lining him up all over the LSU defense, similar to how Clemson utilized Isaiah Simmons in 2019.

Regardless of position, J. Mathews is an elite talent that ‘O’& Co. need to keep in-state, and I believe LSU is in very good position early on in his recruitment. And regarding the out-of-state (OOS) “smoke”, I believe it stems from Mathews’ response to a question from a Miami Hurricanes insider [about LSU being the only school with a legitimate shot to sign him] whereby he said, “The only school that I have ever been to is LSU. A lot of schools are scared to recruit me because of that reason, but I feel like there’s a lot of distractions close to home, so I want to see others places and see if there are better places to live if football doesn’t work out. I hope I can visit some other schools.”

Juxtapose that response to the one given in an interview yesterday, about LSU being in his top-6 [and how the Gators, Longhorns, and local Tigers have made the biggest impression], where he said, “LSU that’s the first offer and of course it’s the home town team. I don’t like the teams to shy away from me because it’s the hometown school. Coach O hits me up like three times a week, him personally telling me he was the first to offer and that’s a special feeling. I like how the depth chart is looking. They don’t have anyone committed or anyone on roster and I feel I can go there and ball out on their defense three years in a row and get to the league.”

DeMario Tolan (OLB, 4*, #243, Kissimmee, FL) – received an offer from Manny Diaz and the Miami Hurricanes on January 20th. Immediately following the HC extending the offer, it was Blake Baker who had a 10-minute phone conversation with D. Tolan. Baker communicated to Tolan how impressed he was with his junior tape – stating how he believes Tolan is one of the best LBs in the state of Florida. More specifically, Baker identified DeMario as a heady prospect that plays fast and smart. This assessment has been supported by another, who stated the following about Tolan, “He can run, hit with some authority and cover people in the slot.”

On February 1st, approximately 3-4 days after hiring Baker, LSU offered DeMario Tolan, and it definitely sounds like the interest is mutual. Tolan was recently quoted in an interview saying, “Auburn and LSU are big-time programs and they definitely have my attention. Each school is a big name, I have dreamed about playing for those schools, and I will be able to speak on them more as I get to know more about them. I just know they have my attention.”

Shemar James (OLB, 4*, #133, Mobile, AL) – recently dropped a top-8 that’s based on the relationship with coaches recruiting him, as he hasn’t yet stepped foot on any college campus. His top schools include LSU, Bama, Auburn, Georgia, Florida, Florida State, Texas A&M, and Michigan. Based on an interview that I recently read, I noted a couple of interesting factors as follows:

1. Geography (distance btwn. hometown & BR). Another LSU commit for 2022, Lucas Taylor, is from Mobile, AL, and I recall him pointing out that BR is actually closer than Auburn and Tuscaloosa. Always nice to be close to a recruits home, and hopefully, this leads to a visit from James once the dead period is lifted.
2. Date offered & relationship built. Shemar mentioned that he has been in contact with each of his top-8 since they offered. Besides Auburn (who offered when Gus was still HC), LSU’s 10/29/2020 offer was the earliest of the other candidates and, in some cases, significantly earlier (FSU-12/6/20; UF-1/14/20; aTm-1/19/21). Hopefully the additional contact w/ S. James results in closer relationship with Tiger coaches.

PREDICTION
For LSU's 2022 recruiting class, linebacker is a position that coach ‘O’ and the Tigers will have to get at least one (1) commitment from out-of-state.

While I don’t have a strong conviction on any particular recruit, I’m going to predict that we are able to land one (1) of the Louisiana kids. Additionally, I’m predicting that Blake Baker’s pre-existing relationships with one (1) of the south Florida LBs results in a commitment. That would be a 2-man class that looks something like this:

1. Jacoby Mathews or Javae Gilmore (LA), and
2. Travious Lathan or DeMario Tolan or Leon Hart (FL)

This is what I think as well. We need linebackers and will take less d linemen or only one running back because of it.

OU is leading for Medlock. It wouldn’t surprise me if he commits sometime in the summer.

Regardless of what position you want to list him as, Matthews is a must get.

I’ve heard rumblings about Perkins and LSU despite all of the A&M smoke. I had no idea he was originally from Louisiana either. I think we at least have a punchers chance, particularly if we have a good year and A&M takes a step back like I’m expecting.

Nice job, as usual.

A few little housekeeping issues I noted as I read through it all. Demario has his named spelled Tolen and Tolan (between title and write-up), and even inadvertently Lathan (in the final summary).

Also out of curiosity is there any logic behind the order listed or those separated by the 2 different posts?

Great post. The only thing I would quibble
with is that I think we probably set our sights on signing 3 LBs (especially if one of them is jacoby matthews, whom we may promise a chance to play safety first). After losing raesjon and not seeing much of the freshmen LBs this past year, I think 3 LBs is probably the number we’ll want to sign in the 2022 class

Thanks for pointing this out, Alumni95. Much appreciated, and I edited to correct.

In regard to your question about logic of order listed, my response is that none was intended. Basically, I started with the highest rated guys and recruits I had the most information on, then worked my way down my list of targets. The only reason I broke it up into two (2) posts is because it was too long for one (TD restricts post length to 7,900 characters).

Thanks for your feedback, it’s much appreciated!!

Agreed, GeauxLSU4. I would love to be out Texas A&M (and everyone else) for Harold Perkins. It would be quite a delight!!

Completely agree, LifeAquatic, the staff is probably aiming for three (3). I’d be thrilled with any combination of three (3) LBs from the ones mentioned above, as I believe they are all quality players!

I like the Louisiana connection of Mathews (if he is indeed going to be a LB, but another one we need regardless of position) and Gilmore. Then Citizen if he would want to try out a Patrick Queen type deal, but he may be to good a RB for that and probably just stick to RB. Either way I hope he is part of this class. Looks good. Glad to see we have some out of state options as well. Also Kendall Daniels could have some effect if we land him in this years class. Looks like he could be one of those tweener S/LB types if he puts on some weight.

Totally agree, boxcar willie, about Kendall Daniels Having potential to an OLB and that citizen is a must-get in the 2022 class.

Also agree that citizen has the potential to be an ILB in college. It is my understanding he plays both ways in high school (LB on defense). The kid is already 217 pounds as a junior, so he will definitely have the size if he is interested in making the conversion.
