Stanford has extremely strict admissions requirements and they do not make exceptions for athletes. The boosters do not run that place, billionaire business leaders do.
That was my point, I don't understand why his coach is so shocked he was denied admission. Yes he has a 4.0, but a 26 on the ACT is not even close to being the admission standard for Stanford. Also, I would imagine they use the SAT.

probably because kids with lesser qualifications have gotten into Stanford

That's a lie by Stanford. He gets into Harvard if the coach wants him. Shaw just doesn't have the nads to admit that they wanted someone else.
Shame on Stanford for lying!

I agree, 100%. I am not on my home computer right now, but I will be later on in the day. I had some links bookmarked about the SAT/GPA requirements of the top academic schools in D-1. When it comes to football, Stanford didn't even have the highest average SAT score. It may have been Rice, Duke, or one of the military academies, but it was not Stanford. And the team with the highest average was around 1080 or so...for the average.
This kid's ACT translates to about an 1160 or so. Anyone who can do basic statistics (and I am sure the admissions director at Stanford is smart enough to do that) can deduce that plenty of elite athletes were let in with below Tillman's standardized testing (not to mention his GPA).
They simply don't want the kid and are using a bullshite excuse at the last minute because they got some guys they didn't expect to land.

a few people were admitted with worse grades and worse scores.
maybe they can play the fluglehorn in the band.
I seriously doubt that Tiger scored in the 30s. Not because he's dumb but because 98 percent of his life was golf after he was 3.

SECRb is saying the Jameis Winston just visited Stanford this weekend and has them in his final 2. He is waiting to get accepted apparently.
If the school really wants him, they go the old academic waiver route. Most FBS schools do this, not sure about Stanford.

This is complete bullshite. I would guess they make exceptions for most football and basketball players.

I don't understand how you could plan to enroll at Stanford without taking the SAT...

My mistake. Stanford does have the highest average SAT average in the country, at least according to some data from more than a decade ago. I got that screwed up with the adjusted graduation rates.
Adjusted Graduation Rates for 2011
1. 97 - Notre Dame
2. 94 - Northwestern
3. 93 - Boston College, Duke and Rice
6. 91 - U.S. Naval Academy
7. 89 - Rutgers
8. 88 - U.S. Military Academy, Miami (Fla.)
10. 87 - Penn State and Stanford
Top SAT Scores in 1997
1) Stanford 1051
2) Northwestern 1037
3) Duke 1012
4) Vandy 974
5) Rice 969
6) UVA 933
7) Oregon State 930
8) SMU 920
9) Pacific 917
10) Wake Forest 911
Now, average SAT scores have gone up both nationally (50th percentile is a higher score now than a decade ago) and among athletes. The Atlanta Journal Constitution has data for public schools only. As you can see, there are very few public schools on the initial list.
But in 2008, the top public schools were GT (1028), Oregon State (997), Michigan (997), and UVA (993). So let's say there is about a 50-60 point increase for most schools. That means Stanford's average is probably in the 1100-1110 range.
frick Stanford for lying in the press about this kid not meeting the minimum requirements when he is most likely in the top half of their football team.

In 2003, Yale didn't require the SAT for anyone. ACT scores were just put in a correlating scale for the SAT. I imagine just about every school in America does the same.
And I never took the ACT. I don't most of my college classmates did, either.
Posted on 1/31/12 at 2:20 pm to vl100butch
Didn't get admitted even though he had a 4.0 and a 26?
I know a 26 ACT score is mediocre at best, but I was under the impression everyone made exceptions for athletes?

Posted on 1/31/12 at 2:24 pm to O
A 26 is only "mediocre at best" on the OT. The national average in 2011 was 21.1.
Posted on 1/31/12 at 2:29 pm to Keys Open Doors
Yeah, it's been since 2003 that I was applying for colleges, but I remember needing an SAT score if I wanted to leave the South.
Posted on 1/31/12 at 2:31 pm to O
I wouldn't call a 26 "mediocre at best". It is probably a full standard deviation or more over the average.
Posted on 1/31/12 at 2:33 pm to Mr Charisma
Interesting. I never paid too much attention to the fine print since I took the SAT as a junior, but I remember Yale's requirements being either the SAT, SAT Writing, and two subject tests or the ACT and two SAT subject tests.
I'm surprised that some schools would be more rigid than Yale when it comes to testing.

Yeah, for a kid with a Louisiana education, a 26 is far, very far beyond mediocre.

Ha, well you will probably have more insight than I, because I sure as hell wasn't applying to Yale!

absolutely, positively.
here ya go. LINK
84th percentile. damn fine score.
there's no damn way all those guys from stanford football team are in the 85th or above. absolutely no way.
granted, stanford is one of the best, of not THE best school in the country, but if you took the whole pool of competitive D-1 football recruits, i betcha a 26 would be in the 97th percentile nationwide. so either stanford gets nearly ALL of the smart ones, OR they 'lower their requirements' for some.
