TOPS does not count as athletic financial aid. It is not an LSU scholarship, it’s a State of Louisiana Scholarship available to all students that qualify, not just athletes, and can be used at any school in the state. A walkon using TOPS does not count against the 85.

If he plays, he counts against the 85.

He is a legit player. Not to label him, but he is of the Welker mold imho (an atlhlete that runs GREAT routes but not a deep threat past high school for the most part). He looks great on film and is an excellent athlete, but the competition was shite. I mentioned the same thing with Curry last year. Honestly, I think he is worth a scholarship. But he is a project based on having to figure out the best way to rise up to the level of competition he will see (again, just like Curry). One last note, I feel he is a 5 year guy that will pay off bigly over time. I would love to see him at LSU.

I am a fan of the kid. But baseball / soccer does not fully equate with beating a DB at the collegiate level...especially when most of the one's that he faced in high school were pretty avearage (at best!). I'm not saying that he can't succeed at the next level. Actually, I said he could, but the learning curve for him could be pretty difficult to overcome quickly. Time will tell. Again, I hope he becomes a Tiger and I hope that he succeeds...in a big way.

Ask Edna Karr if he is legit. Burned them twice for long Touchdowns. And when I say burned think toast. On one he was covered slipped and scored. The other was a kick return.

My understanding is that it’s been his long dream to play football and baseball at LSU. No harm in hoping he makes it. If he was 6’3” it’d probably be given. Alas he is not.

TOPS:

If he plays, he counts against the 85.

He can't play his 1st year without counting, but after the first and if he has a 3.0+ gpa, he can play football without counting. He won't count against baseball at any time. The rules:

quote:

15.5.1.1 Football or Basketball, Varsity Competition. In football or basketball, a student-athlete who was recruited (see Bylaw 15.02.9) by the awarding institution and who receives institutional financial aid (as set forth in Bylaw 15.02.5.2) granted without regard in any degree to athletics ability does not have to be counted until the student-athlete engages in varsity intercollegiate competition (as opposed to freshman, B-team, subvarsity, intramural or club competition) in those sports. (Revised: 1/16/93 effective 8/1/93, 1/11/94, 6/20/04, 1/15/11 effective 8/1/11, 1/18/14 effective 8/1/14)

15.5.1.1.1 Exception—Receipt of Institutional Academic Aid Only. In football or basketball, a student-athlete who was recruited (see Bylaw 15.02.9) by the awarding institution and whose only source of institutional financial aid is academic aid based solely on the recipient’s academic record at the certifying institution, awarded independently of athletics interests and in amounts consistent with the pattern of all such awards made by the institution, may compete without counting in the institution’s financial aid team limits, provided he or she has completed at least one academic year of full-time enrollment at the certifying institution and has achieved a cumulative grade-point average of at least 3.000 (on a 4.000 scale) at the certifying institution. (Adopted: 10/27/05 effective 8/1/06, Revised: 1/15/11 effective 8/1/11)

First rules states that athlete counts in football and basketball. The second is the exception for a program like TOPS.

The rule says “recruited”. He won’t take an official visit which is what I hear happens to all the preferred walkons. Does not taking an official mean he wasn’t recruited?

If they didn't give him an official visit, or arrange an in person off campus visit with either him or his family, or issue him a NLI or written financial offer then he is not recruited.

Great. So what is your objection to him posting it here where folks who don’t read DandyDon can see it?

Not directed toward me, but the only objection I have is OP not linking it.

Links are the currency of the web. If you repost someone else's material, it's prudent to give them attribution and a link to the original content.

The link helps the original article and the website it's published on rank better in search results. It has far greater value than just the sum of the traffic it sends.
