Who was "that guy" that you saw last year?

In the portal? No one. 2023 may be worse than 2024 when it all plays out.

Gabriel left

I don't think any of the players in the portal are getting kicked off the team, except for maybe a few discipline problems.

But they are being told that their position is open and there are no guarantees, and that their NIL will be significantly lower or ZERO.

If you don't think this is happening, then you aren't paying attention. This is what happened with Will Howard at K-State. McCord at Ohio State was told they were bringing in high-level transfer and that he would have to compete with the new guy. McCord was getting over 500k in NIL money that would likely not be available if he wasn't the starter.

That would be wild.

It would be telling the committee they're correct that your backup is arse.

They won their championship game with a third string QB. If they had gone undefeated all year with their backup instead of Travis should they have gotten in? This subjective bullshite should never have been the criteria.

Bo Nix and Michael Penix both followed their former offensive coordinators.

Following a former coach is a big theme of the portal and very “typical”

Then you just proved my point. The discussion is obviously in regards to potential QBs leaving to pursue a better spot. Such as Jayden or Burrow. Not QBs who transfer to follow a coach. So the quality QBs listed do not apply to the "horrible year" for QBs of the type that LSU might actively pursue or attain.

Nuss could command a rather large NIL deal if he entered.

Many undervalue what he brings to the table.

Daniels is also a bad example. He was the top dual threat QB in his class. Guess who was #2? Bo Nix. Neither measured up to their talent levels at their first stops, but it was still easy enough to see how athletic they were and that they both had potential.

DJ Uiagalelei was the #2 QB in the 2020 class.

Kyle McCord was the #6 QB in the 2021 class.

Dante Moore was the #3 QB in the 2023 class.

I think it’s easy to say it’s a “down year” simply due to A) the ridiculous 2022 QB transfer class and B) the benefit of hindsight.

Williams, Ewers, Dart, Daniels, Nix, and Penix all transferred in 2022. I think that’s the outlier, not the norm. On top of that we have the benefit of being able to look back and see how all of these guys actually performed. There will be someone from this transfer class who we look back at and say “yeah, the signs were there.”

We also don’t know how many more guys will enter the portal once the current crop starts finding landing spots, and coaching vacancies start getting filled. Dart and Williams didn’t enter the portal until January. Daniels didn’t enter the portal until February. Granted it’s different now with the portal windows, but the current window doesn’t close for another few weeks. Then there’s the spring window as well.

TL;DR - Yeah, this class may not be as loaded as 2022. But that doesn’t mean it’s “a horrible year” as OP suggested.
