This. I have faith in the man to find/make a good one over the next two years. People don't realize how big of a coup it was for LSU even to almost land a top pro-style QB with our track record of run run run run run run play action run run run run run offense.

I'm not sure that it was that big of a coup considering we did sign the #1 Pro-style QB available the year before. ZM was the most coveted passing QB available two years ago and could've gone to any school in the country and Miles signed him.

Does Philip and Stephen Rivers dad still coach at Wakefield High? If so, that would introduce an interesting dynamic into his recruitment.

That's just not true. Very few teams will take a JUCO QB no matter how good they are. Only teams that are really desperate will do it. Wisconsin, LSU, and Auburn in recent years.

That actually is more false. ZM was highly coveted by multiple schools. What happens is schools that are not in the running don't even offer to JUCO players to avoid potentially loosing a high school player. Alabama and Arkansas both offered him and recruited him hard.

Bama and a couple of others recruited ZM heavily.

There are not a lot of Juco QB's and often they have baggage, Newton was kicked off Fla for stealing a computer, some teams may not want to deal with stuff like that

Mett had a little trouble with junk in the trunk.

Juco QBs are a gamble, Mett and Newton were the exception not the rule. Most talented QBs stay on the roster. Mett was looking for a return to the big stage, we just happened to be the right fit.

My main point was that LSU doesn't yet have a reputation as being a place where a pro-style QB can come to be groomed for the NFL.

What schools do? LSU has had a QB drafted #1 overall in the last 5-10 years and his successor is now the #1 free agent QB in the NFL. Those were the last 2 starters before JL/JJ.

Lots of teams would have taken MZ, just we got him. The rarity is having a top rated Juco QB.

Not comparing on the field accomplishments obviously, just the fact that they were both highly recruited. Like H-town said, that's the rarity, as most QB's worth that much attention stay on the roster.

Yes LSU got a number 1 draft pick in JR, but in a recruits eyes OU, USC, Arky, and UT are the schools you consider if you want people talking about your abilities as a QB. Perception is king.

Bama's in the same boat we are.

If I'm a big time HS QB, I'm looking at wide open offenses in the Big 12 or USC.

I get what you are saying, but the NFL doesn't draft on stats alone. JR proves that a good QB can do well at LSU and get drafted high, its the job of the LSU coaches to make the recruits realize this.

Mettenberger's recruitment was helped by the fact that he was going to come in as a Sophomore, with 3 years to play.

well, that and the whole "he's really talented" thing

It's not that hard of a sell when you have a recent concrete example like JR.

totally agree...their peers are some of the best recruiters. they can give them a jump start to look at something they may have never thought of, give info and opinions on folks they're already looking at, etc.
