Instate Recruiting Can Get Jonny Jones to Final Four

Initially when Jones was hired, I was skeptical of his ability to recruit out of state, but I did some research and looking back, if you just manage to lock down the instate kids, you can have a top tier squad without having to go out of state in the first place.
For example, look at the class of 2004 for LSU
Rivals
Those 3 players were all major contributors to the team, and we didnt need to search far to find them.
Im just saying, that a squad that starts with Jerrell Martin and other local talent can do more than many think.

The talent has been far down the last few years. This was probably the first year since TJ was hired that the state actually had an elite prospect in Gathers and some aren't even sold on him (don't include me I think he will be a very good college player).
Thankfully, the state seems to be in better shape on the basketball front, particularly next year, so if we can land those guys it will go a long way.

Next two years are going to be money years instate.
If Johnny can get all of the big names, he could have a Final Four team on his hands.
That is a big IF, and still doesn't guarantee success.
Basically, Jones has a shot with the talent in the next few years in Louisiana to do it, but it's going to be a tall task.

To regularly compete for final 4 appearances you need multiple top 25 players on rotation and to have the majority of your roster made up of top 75 or so players with the occasional sleeper.
Basketball is probably the sport in which the recruiting services are the most accurate on collegiate talent... so look it up on Scout or Rivals... how many top 25 recruits has Louisiana produced in the last 4 years?

Thomas was a walkon. That just doesnt happen everyday. We also werent very deep, hurt us against ucla. Temple wasnt a great playet, but he could def play d.
Tyrus was 5-10 when he entered highschool and 6-7 1/2 when he left lsu. Not to mention oir starting five plaued with eachother since they were little kids. Im not in the baskeyball circles, we didnt have to search for those guys because of Temple. I didnt like davis as much as the others, but you cant deny the passion that dude showed.
Like the poster said above, if we want to continuously compete, we are going to have to do more. LSU cant wim a bcs title with only Louisiana kids, they not going to win the tourney with only louisiana kids.
Keeping the kids at home is just the beginning.

And the end. We're never going to be Kentucky, Kansas, Duke, etc. or even Florida.
If we get all the best instate players we should be able to be a tournament team most years, and have a magical final four like year once in a blue moon.
But we're never going to be able to nationally recruit or even regionally recruit to a big degree.

I think he will be able to recruit in texas. Maybe even mississippi

Tyrus Thomas was not a walk-on.
LSU cannot just rely on in-state recruits. The quality fluctuates and many have academic issues. Johnny certainly needs to lock down the quality recruits, while adding in some talent from Mississippi, Texas, and the nation.
The talent in Louisiana has been horrible the past four years, but it is picking up and looking good for the next several years. Johnny is coming in at a good time.

Tyrus was definitely not a walk-on but he did take a redshirt IIRC. He was an anomaly in that respect.
Locking down Louisiana makes us a tournament team. Jackson MS, Houston, and Dallas makes us a final 4 team. But then you're talking about going toe to toe with every program around those cities so it is no easy task.

This is completely false. In just this year's Final Four, Louisville and Kansas each had zero top 25 players, while Ohio State had one.

True. It's the one sport where you get to see kids from around the country go against each other in the summer AAU leagues. So, they don't have to guess whether this 6'7" guy is dominating just because he's going against 6'2" centers.
And, it's the one sport where 2 or 3 recruits over a 2 year period can change an entire program around.

Elijah Johnson was a top 25 recruit fwiw. Kansas signs a bunch of players in the 20-50 range and develops them.

Johnson was No. 35 on Scout and according to Rivals, he was No. 24. Borderline, but my point is still valid. The OP said you needed multiple top 25 players to make the final four. I think that has been proven wrong year after year.

He got a last second Scholly due to attrition and redshirted because of a neck injury.

notice that UK did not start any Kentucky hs kids 2012 tournament.
They had Mr Basketball of Kentucky, coming off the bench.
When UK had Riley and Dampier 66 Finals run, those guys were from upstate NY, and Indiana. Of the 4 future pros in that lineup, they had one starter from Kentucky. From Hazard, which was locked down UK at the time.
Louisiana locking down for LSU would be nice, but its not going to be quite enough. Houston would make it enough. Just get one of the top three Houston guys every two years. And two of the top 4 Louisiana guys every year. If they stayed in school a few years, you would have a competitive team.
To use an example I am familiar with, Murray (Kentucky) had guys on their roster from 11 different states. started 3 seniors and 2 juniors.
The premier in state guy Mr Basketball from west of Murray (Mayfield) went to UK.
Did not start at UK, yet.

Let me start by saying, I went to LSU so I understand the mentality that LSU believes it should and can get the best players, that's what we want, that's what we once had but saying that the instate recruiting hasn't been good just because LSU hasn't gotten any of the kids is wrong.
I posted this list on Hogville when I was talking about Dee's recruitment.
Malik Morgan (LSU)
Ricardo Gathers (Baylor)
Javan Felix (Texas)
Deion Taylor (Richmond)
Craig Victor (Sophomore)
Dee Wagner (Arkansas)
Michael Qualls (Arkansas)
Reginal Johnson (Sophomore)
Brian Bridgewater (Junior)
Troy Jones (Pensecola State)
Cleveland Thomas (Louisiana Lafayette)
Jamal Samuel (Undecided)
Dewayne Benjimin (UTEP)
Louis Dabney DNP (Tulane)
That's all from this year alone. To me that was the best players in the state from what I've seen, and you're telling me talent is down? 2011 and 2009 classes was weak, 2008 and 2010 were not.
You could take that group of players I listed and give em 2 years under a good coach, you'd be on the verge of the Top 10 and a definite Elite 8 type of squad, based on the familiarity with each others games and talent there. All of those are committed to D1 schools expect the 3 underclassmen and 1 JC, and yet they aren't good enough to come into LSU and aren't good enough to develop the program? There is no quick fix to get back to winning, you've got to rebuild a nature of winning. Even if LSU only had some of those kids, add them to what you have now and you'd have a very competitive squad. No matter how you see it, LSU has to lock down Louisiana.
Since scout and rivals rankings mean so much to the fans, cause that what makes players so good, Louisiana had 4 teams ranked in the final ESPN Fab 50, and 5 in the final RivalsHigh 100. The only states with more were Texas and New Jersey, but yet, talent is down?

Very nice stat.

You listed two sophomores. They won't be helping anyone anytime soon.
But to your point, those are solid players and LSU should have been in on some of them more than they were. But to say LSU would make a Final Four with that group, I don't believe is accurate.
I do agree that this was a good year, but I don't believe the past 4 were good at all. In fact, they were horrid.

If LSU can consistently get most of the top 3 players in the state each year, that is enough IMO. We've been letting the top Louisiana players leave for years now. We all know how big a difference one player can have on a basketball program.

exactly.. this isn't football, where there's 22 starters..
1 stud that stays in state, makes up 1/5th of our starting lineup= huge impact
