We could have but Saban had to get the NFL out of his system. That wasn't going away. We had 4 losses in 2004 before the bowl game loss. One was a blow out coming off a NC. It was not assumed Saban was "all that" then.

Bertman did the right thing and hired a good HC.

Huizenga would have paid what it would have taken to get Saban. LSU could not have won a bidding war, plus Saban was bound and determined to become a HC in the NFL. It was simply too much for LSU to overcome.

I agree. Bertman did what he had to do at the time. And at least he actually interviewed qualified candidates instead of making a snap decision to hire a D-line coach.
