I agree and hope for the best. I spoke to his D-Line coach, who said he was borderline SEC talent. Im sure his coach is as shocked as anyone.

Since the St. Paul's coaches see SEC talent about as frequently as they see Elvis or Sasquatch, I wouldn't put a whole lot of stock in that appraisal. How often do Miles and Co. see SEC talent?

My point exactly in my following post. His D Line coach has never coached an SEC player so how would he know ??

if he's worth a shite as a coach, most coaches are capable of recognizing an SEC caliber player, esp if you're not used to seeing them they'd stand out that much more.

I sure would hope thats how every player LSU signs is on the field. Last time I checked, a consistently top 10 program should be selective.

lynx, unfortunately every player LSU signs is not psycho on the field. Kelvin Sheppard is an example of one who doesn't play that physical on the field. Danny McCray. etc.

There aren't a ton of Ryan Bakers who have both the talent and the psychoness.

I have already pretty much given up on Prater like you have, but I think Bates has a little more talent than Prater does. You have to at least give Bates credit for being a dominant high school player, and also being the MVP at that Scout Combine. He has more ability than some on here are giving him credit for.

He reminds me of Brian West when he was 5A All-State for West Monroe in 1998. VERY SIMILAR.

Not really. Brian West was bigger and slower. The only thing they have in common is they are both white and played DE in high school.

Glad to see SPS producing some atheletes. When I finished there in 1987, we were not very good in that regard. It was a much smaller school back then. They have always been decent in baseball. Of course R.S. (baseball not football) was great there. Good for St. Paul's and for LSU!

Lots of mass hysteria, delusion and what sounds like outright Jealousy from the virginal geek squad on this board. Funny shite indeed.

Maybe Miles got tired of watching all the utterly confused "Fast Athletes" in that embarrassing Chinese Fire Drill defense in 2008 and feels the need to get a few Steltz/Sanders types on the field to prevent all the Mass Confusion of last season. You're seeing that directly reflected in his recruiting right now........

Steltz and Sanders shouldn't be mentioned in the same sentence.

Are you kidding me?

Sanders?

That guy was out of position on about three out of every four running plays.

What were you looking at?

For those that care, Scout upgraded Houston Bates from NR to a three star today.

Of course they rate him as a DE but according to most, he might line up at LB or FB--correct?

LSU needed a guy to lift the trophies. Bates said he would be glad to be that guy.

Anyway I don't think anyone is super pissed with who we got. Its simply the timing that is weird to me. You are going to end up with some guys that aren't 5 stars and probably won't make the field except kickoff. What baffles me about Miles' recruiting strategy though is that he hands out offers to these kids early in the game. I don't know why you wouldn't hold their offer back and see if you can get a surprise commitment from a bigger player and if not then offer a Houston Bates.

Maybe he Miles really liked what he saw and wanted to nail him down before he became a popular target?

There is about a 5% chance of this happening. Maybe that is Miles' idea but he seems to do it every year.

did any of ya'll ever play 4 yrs of hs football?

Sure did, got recruited to play in college too, but what do I know.

Bates may become a great player, but the odds are against him being a better player than a 4 or 5 star that we should have held out for. Given his offer list, it's not like we couldn't have gotten his commitment in January if other recruits fell through. baffling decision at this point, but hopefully it works out.
