Les- A. Say what you want about him, the man recruit.

Chavis - C. Doesn't seem to hit the road too much, but the recruits seem to like him when they get one on ones with him on campus

Frank Wilson- A++ no explanation needed

Cooper- B seems to do the majority of his work at the camps

Brick Haley- A. He's made some extremely tough pulls. He didn't land his big fish this year, but that was a long shot.

Thomas McGaughey- incomplete. We'll see if any of the in roads he made in the Texas area this past year pay any dividends next year.

Studrawa- F. I can't name one guy he's landed or even any recruits even saying his presence helped get them here.

Ensminger- F. See above. I never got bringing him, if you're going to designate coach to TEs he better damn well be a great recruiter. Steve isn't....at all.

Krags- Incomplete.

I think our WR hire is pretty crucial, we really need a guy who can get after it on the recruiting trail. There's a few too many guys on the offensive of the ball who don't seem to be pulling their own weight.

He was on the plane today with CLM, so does he earn a B-?

Or is it real (read new) leadership at OC that's indicated? Don't know, just asking...

Agree for the most part

Les-A
Bump Wilson to an A
Chavis - C
Cooper to a C+
Haley to a B
McGaughey to a C (doing some work in Texas 2013)
Stud D- only cause he got Ware
Ensminger Z-
Krags B for a QB coach he has gone out and done well with big time QB prospects

I think a lot of Tennessee fans have said that Chavis is a lazy recruiter. I love Chavis though, but I'm not sure how much he is involved in recruiting.

He seems to do more than he did at UT but I think he just doesn't like doing it. That's fine as long as continues to churn out top defenses.

I have no idea why Ensminger is on the staff. He brings nothing to the table. He is a journeyman position coach who can't recruit.

Every coach should have a purpose. They should either be an elite recruiter, elite tactician, or competent in both regards.

I have full respect for coaching abilities of Chavis and Cooper. Wilson is an incredible recruiter. Haley is good at both aspects of the job, but not spectacular. Kragthorpe obviously has a tough situation to deal with, but he has an impressive resume when it comes to developing QBs.

I am curious to see how McGaughey does. ST, WR, RB...these coaches need to reel in star recruits.

If I was in charge of the program, I would have never hired Ensminger. If you want to let Ben Wilkerson be the OL coach, fine. Then fire Ensminger and bring in someone who is either a world-class coach like Tolbert or an ace recruiter (but please not Aubrey Hill).

And Studrawa would be on the hot seat aka welcome to leave for a job with Urban Meyer.

Studrawa is okay at recruiting, but not this year.

2011: Paul Turner (easy get)
2010: Jordan Allen (easy get as WM guy), Evan Washington, Spencer Ware...that's actually quite good.
2009: Josh Downs (easy get), Chris Garrett, KeKe Mingo, credited with Randle as well although that was mostly Les
2008: Thomas Parsons, Tyler Edwards (easy get), Chris Tolliver, Matt Branch (easy get)

yeah like I said, I never understood the hire of Ensminger. Also considering he replaced Henson who actually was a very good recruiter

Les - B+ because this year he deserves an F. Didn't close on a recruit, lost a recruit by not being more aware of the Kiel situation, and is going to close with no one special in this class.

Chavis - C for recruiting ability, B for closing ability and reputation. Chavis is usually a pretty good closer. He doesn't recruit a lot, but his name and rep brings a lot of good press.

Frank Wilson - A+ great at keeping LA talent home. Lost out on LC, but usually locks it down.

Cooper - B

Brick Haley - B+. He is great at stealing a DL or two, but isn't a consistent recruiter and doesn't recruit a high volume.

McGaughey - F. We're non existent in Texas, and there are some big names for 2013 who are LSU leans that haven't heard a word from the staff.

Stud - F

Ensminger - F. Why is this guy on staff?

Krags - Incomplete, but he didn't get a single QB this year and we weren't even in the running for a single Texas QB. I think that his illness and newness to the program give him a pass. I have faith he'll grab us a QB.

Les- A. Nothing to say here. Whether you think he is a great, good or mediocre gameday coach, you can't deny he is a good recruiter.

Chavis - C-. Fairly lazy, IMO. He hits the road only when he absolutely has to. Seems like he can connect with recruits easy, I have no idea why he doesn't recruit harder...

Frank Wilson- B+. Good recruiter but a tad bit overrated. Lacks OOS presence but I do like his connections in New Orleans. NO is a hotbed of talent. Poor schools and hidden talent all over the city. Bad schools put a lot of great talent under the radar. A lot of kids here get wasted potential in bad school systems.

Cooper- C+. Cooper is kinda lazy on the recruiting trail. He doesn't seem to go on the road a lot and loves to evaluate raw talent and develop it. Doesn't seem to go after elite blue chips too often, mostly under the radar guys. This is ok because he develops guys into superstars.

Brick Haley- A+. Best recruiter on our staff, IMO. Really the only coach that has a strong OOS presence. He landed us Montgomery and Ego among some others. Both were big surprises.

Thomas McGaughey- F. So far nothing to show for his supposedly good Texas connections.

Studrawa- F. Actually use to be a decent recruiter in his earlier days here but he has been extremely lazy lately...

Ensminger- F. Nothing needs to be said here.

Krags- F. Hasn't shown much yet but he was partly why we landed Kiel, at least initially.

We definitely need a great recruiter at WR coach.

This

I"ll get blasted for this but I'm saying it anyway. Stud is being carried by Miles.
I dont think he was a good OL coach and I don't think he can do the OC job without Krags.

Also it does appear that the staff as a whole was resting on the win totals for this years recruiting. Still a decent class....

Position coaches have an area and then once the relationship is built thelat particular players position coach and the OC/DC/HC help close. Really whomever the kid takes a liking too.

So might want to take it easy on Stud this year. He might not have hit the road as much on the recruiting trail if he was OC and drawing up game plans.

I'm not familiar though. Was Stud pulling double duty as OC and recruiter or was Krags able to hit the road recruiting and building relationships?

Stud hasn't done much of anything in recruiting since his earlier days here. As each year went by, he seemed to get worse in recruiting. OC could be a excuse this year but what about previous years when he was only a OL coach? I've honestly never liked Stud as coach here...and he still makes me nervous as OC.
