LSU-bound athlete Russell Shepard (Houston, Texas/Cy-Ridge):

"I felt like it was crazy that for a school that just won the national title had only two QB's on scholarship and not one of those two have started a college game or played in a college game before," Shepard said, "so the depth chart was a consideration."

"I felt like I could go to a national program and not have to compete against five or six QBs, and I felt like the earlier I committed, the more I could scare away other recruits that had LSU as an option. There could be an opportunity to come in and be a three- or four-year starter. Lastly, I wanted to focus on my senior football season of high school, and by committing early, I would not have to worry about missing workouts to travel to all these schools."

It doesn't sound like the previous R.S. interviews.
Read what he said.

Not a big deal. That's what I'd look at if I was a high school QB too. Sheppard knows he'll have to work to be a starter.

I guess he is saying the "scaring off other QB recruits" is different from his quotes of "welcoming competition."

I do tend to over analyze things, but I recently read where he said that He would do whatever it took to win , and if needed he would line up in the slot or ....

But I'll say no more. He's a great player, and I'll be happy to see him in P&G

We have to remember he is only 17 years old...

Maybe his father has since helped him say the right things and have the right attitude towards competition..

How many guys do you think that say "bring on the competition" really really want that extra guy or two to beat out, deep down? sure they all want to be the best but they also want to play ball....Be real...Everyone wants Playing time...Less QB's equal great chance to play...

I bet Tewbow has scared a couple of QB off UF campus...No one getting that job for two more years...

Words might have been put in his mouth as well, or it could have been taken out of context.

We have video interviews of him where he says he relishes the competition.

lets be honest, RS is a very rare athlete, does he have any real competition on this roster or in this class? I would say not.

besides, after everything he's done already for LSU football, it will take a lot more than this for me to question him.

Maybe nobody asked him previously about his thoughts on the depth chart. All he said was what he thought about it, which is what anybody would think he thought if they knew anything about the situation. But this whole article gives too much credit to the depth chart. In the final analysis a player goes where he wants to be. Period. If the depth chart is thin, then that is one of the reasons. If the depth chart is crowded, then he says he has confidence that he can come in and compete and beat the others out. Nothing earth shattering here.
