It's paid out in 9 installments, but they can use it year round. You think what they don't spend gets taken back or something?

As for the down payments, you can lease many cars with very little cash down. And even if they lease a brand new car, the down payment is only around 3k. So even if they can't come up with a dime on their own, they save their coa money each month and get the vehicle in March of their freshman year. That money is supposed to be used for things not included in tuition, like cars, cell phone bill, off campus housing, off campus meals, etc. It's perfectly legit.

I assume a lot of the leases are fleet vehicles too so the dealership has much more room to help out with lease terms and down payments. It's probably not the same deal as Joe Schmoe could get, especially where credit checks are concerned, but it's probably not much different than if you or I had a friend at a dealership. And as far as the credit checks, these guys can show reliable income that's virtually guaranteed for 4-5 years. Joe Schmoe can only show current income and credit history.

I'd be very surprised if there isn't one or more auto dealerships in Baton Rouge that is friendly to LSU players, except LSU players don't get nearly as much as Alabama.

As far as the discrepancy between schools, I read that the school has to provide a value of the scholarship and an actual cost of attendance and that difference is what the coa stipend is set at. But, that having a high difference in those amounts can hurt enrollment as it relates to the general student body.

I can tell you this, the money listed that LSU gives players isn't straight cash. They get monetary valued items such as meal plans with small amounts of cash. If a player decides they would rather more cash over meal plan and small cash, they are able too. The money that LSU players get is not much. Eric Reed and a linebacker worked for my dads office when they had time because they said they needed the money. For Reed, the money LSU gave him was not enough to support his daughter.

I'm pretty sure this coa stipend deal started after Reid left LSU. You can Google it's origin, but I think it's somehow tied in to the Ed O'Bannon lawsuit. And from what I've read, it is straight cash.

It's relatively new. I had a coaching friend that is under 30 and he didn't get anything. He was shocked when I showed him that article.

Correct. The problem is most don't know that players get a ton of money now, legally.
And not all players are from families that cant help out. You were saving for college(even a small amt) and your son gets a full ride, room, board, enough money for gas and insurance and you get him a car.

Alot of these kids may not have had transportation to and from school in the past, getting a used Charger isnt going to break the bank for alot of folks.

Agreed. Slade lives with his grandparents in a 350-400K house here, which would probably be 900K or more in BR. He drives his grandfather's 15 year old Dodge Ram truck. Yes it has a lift and rims, but that's nothing considering they handed down the truck that's been paid off for a decade. I'm sure there are a lot of kids like that, not everyone is broke.

But the insurance alone is several $100's per month (think 18-25 year old guys) minimum.

How much did they cost their parents monthly that they now do not have to pay anymore?

exactly, I dont think anyone here has tried to feed an 18 year old football player. Most of these elite recruits have a ton of costs with camps, travel, training, etc. Their Nike gear bill is like 400 bucks a month and that goes away.

Do you have any idea how cheap auto insurance is outside of Louisiana?

In Tennessee, I pay less than $160/month for all THREE of my vehicles with 250,000/500,000 comp/collision coverage, with low deductibles and extras like uninsured motorist, roadside assistance and rental car.

I have lived in Louisiana, Tennessee and now in Virginia. The biggest difference is you can get more coverage in TN and VA for the same price. It is NOLA that drives the damn insurance rates for the entire state. I say that as a former employee of State Farm Insurance.

I am withholding all judgement on Bolden until after their first game of the season against possibly the best defense in 5-A in John Ehret. Glancing over the talent pool and the returning starters for Ehret it is easy to see that they are primed for a championship run--especially with the transfer of Donte Starks at linebacker. They have multiple division I talent on defense with a sophomore lineman in Patrick Jenkins who quite possibly will be the top defensive end in the nation in 2020--6'2" 253. His highlight film is ridiculous for a freshman and his spring footage against Scotlandville and Woodlawn shows a first-step that is big time.

I need to see a high caliber performance against the type talent he is going to see in the SEC week in and week out before I'm sold. There won't be a better time to show it than against this squad in Week 1.

People will get pissed and upset with the post, but I've yet to see him dominant against the best teams they have faced in his career.

But, saying that, I have yet to see Marshall dominate against top competition either. People fail to notice.

No, but John Ehret was in the championship just 2 years ago and has a very good program. They aren't a pushover by any stretch.

It won't be a cakewalk whatsoever. Just saying.

The recent transfer of Starks makes them a viable contender right off the bat. Kid is going to be a 5 star linebacker we will be recruiting very hard in 2 years here at LSU.

I'm pretty sure West Monroe will be ready for them.

yea im plenty familiar with them. And i forget the championships are split, so maybe they make a run but they arent beating WM. They arent well coached enough despite have a few good athletes. This is the story of their last 2 decades

I know they will be ready for them... They are always prepared and it is their home opener in their new stadium.

I have a cousin on the team at WM and is a backup on the offensive line.

Yes, Ehret's biggest problems are on offense. They have a capable Quarterback in Mumphrey and they return Houston at receiver who is a stud, but they lack the offensive coaching capacity to truly every threaten to win it all.

I do not expect them to win the game, but it would not surprise me if they did as they are going to be very well-coached on defense and West Monroe still has to find a new running back, backup quarterback (Foust was very good and valuable last year), and receivers. Bolden can't carry the entire load all year..

Game could very well be a 7-0; 13-7 style game without question.

Ehret played Landry-Walker very well last year too late into the game until the wheels fell off very similar to how West Monroe lost to them in the Dome.

Points well taken Reo, I just think WM will find a weakness and exploit it. Slade will have a great O line in front of him with plenty of room to run.
