I’m glad we’re getting some help in the secondary. What’s the assessment of how good these guys may be? Any idea why they’re transferring?

I think we are set at cb now. Unreal how we turned that around so nicely. Good chance we are better at cb than last season imo. I do think we need help at LB now but we about have all our positions accounted for. Have to see what happens after the spring as well I guess.

Staff had good evals on Gardner and JBC, I’d trust their judgement

Everyone they took last year contributed, pretty much. Many were starters.

That means they're pretty good at this.

Harris and Alexander are both really, really good. I think it’ll take Alexander a few weeks to get used to the competition, but his ceiling is really high.

Chestnut certainly has the resume with being a Freshman All-American. Johnson was highly regarded coming out of high school and started at corner for a playoff team. Sounds like he had some injury problems and got burnt a few games? Regardless, starting as a freshman at OSU is pretty impressive.

All in all, that DB room is going to be really, really good. CBK and company have used to portal masterfully to turn the secondary into a strength. We’re in a much better spot than heading into 2022 spring and I thought the secondary played well. So it’s safe to assume they’ll be even better in 2023.

Someone posted a link to duce chestnut last night. He is a stud. Runs through the. Blocks on the outside and makes tackles. Very excited to watch this kid.

The big question is
How quick can these guys come together as a unit
With no warm up game again this year, they will need to go balls to the walls quickly against a good FSU team

Chestnut plays on a shitty Syracuse team. All their good defensive players are in the portal. Speaks for itself. He was All-ACC his freshman year and honorable mention All-ACC sophomore but teams tried to avoid him more. Another reason he'll go to LSU because his stock will be elevated since he can't be ignored. Yes, he's good. He's one of the best CBs in the portal probably top 5 with Denver Harris. He was one the highest graded ACC CBs 2 years in a row.

Johnson has all the tools to be great. His issue is he lacks the physique to play big time. You can't lack physicality and support the run, you're not going to do much in big boy league regardless how talented you are covering. He needs to eat several cheeseburgers and hardcore LSU's S&C and he'll be a top end CB. It's not for his unwillingness to be physical it's that his body is just not there S&C wise. Once he hits that S&C program and learns to be more physical he'll probably be looking at a starting position maybe next year.

LSU went with experience over superior talent last year because they had no choice. This year not only have they added some experience with Zy Alexander, the amount of purely talented corners is the highest we've seen at LSU in a while. Every corner we picked up in the portal this year has had at least half a year of experience so they have some experience to go on.

This position could end up as a complete strength by the time we play Bama. Our schedule outside of FSU sets up for a complete development of our defense before the Bama game.
