I just figured he was getting his grades in order to transfer to Ole Piss. Didn't LSU start back school today?

We will know soon enough if he's enrolled or not at LSU then

Pretty sure he’s not going anywhere for spring semester (will be at LSU, I mean).

Whats not clear is whether Smith is staying because he wants to be at LSU or if it’s because he has too in order to get his academics in good standing so that he can transfer elsewhere

He can still transfer to Ole Miss now. He would just have to get back to being eligible while he sits out football next year.

Right. Just to be clear (maybe you are already implying this) - that's the reason he would stay for the spring.

If he transfers while academically ineligible, he has to sit out a year.

If he stays at LSU, regains academic eligibility, and transfers after the spring semester, he can play in the fall.

That's all assuming that academic eligibility is the reason he hasn't transferred yet. I hope it's not that, just because if it's something else there's probably a better chance he comes back.

Then you pull his scholarship. If he wants to play the transfer portal game, pull scholarship, pay yourself, then go to Ole Miss.

Or, take yourself out of the transfer portal and get your grades in order while on scholarship. These kids need to learn that every action has a consequence.

If I worked for company A who supplied tuition reimbursement, it's an understanding that I'm staying with company A. I'm not going to say hey boss, I'm going back to school to further my education and I need you to pay for it because when I graduate, I'm going to company B. He would look at me stupid.

I’m kind of with you on this.

I don’t want to see another Arik Gilbert scenario where we bend over backwards to help get the kid academically qualified only to have them stick it up our a$$ by transferring out right away

We definitely could have done that during the break. I don't know if we can (or should, for that matter) do that now that classes are starting.

If you're going to pull the kid's scholly you shouldn't wait two months until he starts spring classes to do so.

I’m with you on this.

At least make Ole Miss’s booster pay his tuition.

Out of state

That one was worth losing. I'd rather not have head cases in the locker room

I am pretty sure the new transfer portal rule states that you have to be in the portal no later than May 1st in order to play this fall. If Smith is truly ineligible now, he won't be able to play anywhere but LSU this fall since he can't be eligible for the transfer portal until after the spring semester which is after May 1. That doesn't mean that we have to keep him, though.

I'm not sure you can pull someone's scholarship mid year, since they're a one year agreement. I know Smith was an early enrollee, but I think scholarships get renewed in the summer each year, so he's probably guarantee his scholarship until after the spring semester.

This is correct.

Not exactly. He’s already in the transfer portal. He doesn’t have to actually transfer by May 1, he just has to be in the portal.

Completely agree with you I’m also glad Gilbert is gone.

That said, I still don’t want to see that type of situation played out again

Weird that lsu is funding his ability to get academically eligible to go somewhere else.

It that just a gentleman’s gesture or did he promise them he was coming back.

I mean there’s really no way of knowing. He could be on the fence about it, in which case it puts LSU in a tough spot - do you burn the bridge completely or try to pull him back?

I don’t think we even know for sure whether he’s enrolled at LSU for spring.
