I like Sagarin but he needs to tweak his algorithm. It's messing up his model's reputation.

IS it in the stars?

I have always held the belief that recruiting is a huge reason schools are successful. I think the stars matter. Every player is not judged appropriately by the star system. It is a flawed system in those regards. But I think that they get close to correct when assessing the total talent a team acquires through the recruiting process.

The jest of it all is this, you must consistently recruit top 15 classes to be a national title contender. You can win games with lesser talent, you may even squeeze out a conference championship. But consistently year in and year out you must recruit in the top 15.

The recruits evaluated are often times very very close in terms of talent. That being said you will always have you're stars. But what is the difference between the top 5 at any position. Well, not much. It all depends on how each player developes. Hence some 5* bust and some 2* shine.

I agree with one change. (Exception) Other than the Joe McKnights or Reggie Bushs at each position (the top one or two depending on each class per position), I don't think there is that much difference in talent in the top 20 or even 35 (especially with offensive linemen) per position. LSU's offensive linemen and linebackers constently rate lower out of high school, but LSU puts them in the NFL.

For that reason alone! (Which goes back to an individuals intangibles/work ethic and coaching/strenght program). This is why teams with depth win. A team that has only one player deep within the top 35 players per position is at a disadvantage compared with teams like LSU and USC with 3 or 4 deep that come from the top 35 per position. This is where injuries/depth come into play.

It still a little baffling to me why USC was a 150-point favorite or whatever the number was over Stanford. USC definitely should have been favored big time, but I always thought the line was way too much.

Kentucky has really done a poor job of recruiting the last five years ... I was surprised that they were so low in these rankings.

Ahhh, this is where it helps to be colorblind. Anything in the blue range passes for purple, and anything yellowish can be gold.

USC and LSU both have one consensus National Championship in this century.

I believe that USC will win another consensus National Championship before LSU does.

Maybe even this season.
