Why would my zoysia grass all of sudden look dormant, like during the winter?
Fungus? Disease? Too much rain?

Chinch bugs, fungus, drought, excessive thatch, too much water, several potential causes.

I just put some down so in for answers.

I've heard zoysia has a sophomore slump of sorts, didn't really believe it but mine struggles coming out of dormancy this year.
Lush and green now but it took some time and some fertilizer.

You need to fertilize again and it will come back. Had it for 20 years and have to fertilize 3 times a year otherwise small patches will start to brown.

Did you spray any herbicides recently?

Over 15 years, I haven’t had to fertilize. It has always been thick and green. I’ll give it a try.

Don’t fertilize it. If it’s a fungus it will make it spread more rapidly. If it’s insects then fertilizer doesn’t treat the problem.
Post pictures. There are too many things that can cause lawns to turn brown to diagnose without pics.
