Bought new house, it has a 16 x 24 shop in the back yard. It's got power and plumbing, however there's no AC, I'm thinking about getting a window unit to provide AC for the space, a 10,000 btu unit. I can get a pretty decent one around $500, however in my online searches I've seen several mini-split units that are 12,000 btu and only $200-$300 more than the window unit. One particular mini-split system I saw was Mr. Cool, says its a DIY install with precharged line sets.

Does anyone have any experience with these mini-split systems? Is the Mr. Cool, as simple to install as advertised? The lazy man realist inside me says just get a window unit and plug and play, but mini-split seems better on the outside, more efficient, quieter etc.

P.S. is 10,000 btu over kill for 16x24, I believe the ceiling is at 8', not sure of the insulation situation in the shop either, and the shop is only partially shaded.

im in the AC business. There is no WAY i would DIY a mini split. Most AC contractors don't even like fooling with them. I'd go window unit all day and twice on sunday

I have a mini-split in my garage. I paid a professional to help install it. It was super easy and keeps my 24 x 30 space cool in the south LA heat. I went with the recommended btus for the space.

I've know several people with mini-splits and they all crapped out after 5-6 years. A window unit may crap out in that time too but they are much less expensive to replace.

I did the Mr cool DIY mini split over one weekend with my dad two springs ago. House had a carport converted into a bonus room but no AC. Space was large for a window unit and only place we could put one would face the street and I’m not trashy.

Hardest part was bending the copper lines, flaring the copper lines, and torquing the nuts at the connections. Other than that it was a breeze. I did have a friend who works in the business stop by and check connections before firing it up.

Power is another issue you’ll have to run a new circuit to the panel with a AC disconnect, but we both have electrical experience.

I wouldn’t go in as a novice but if you have help and a few days and take your time it can be done right without too much headache. No idea on the lifespan as we sold the house this past winter. It was still working great then.

We have an office for 6 in one of our shops. Had a 8000 btu window unit for years. It went out and I bought the following off Amazon for $570:

BLUERIDGE BM09Y18
9,000 BTU (.75 Ton) 18 SEER Single Zone Ductless Mini-Split Heat Pump System - WiFi Capable

I had an AC company come over and they charged $135 to hook it up. Inside unit mounted above 6" below ceiling on one end and the "outside" unit is about 10 feet away mounted on the shop wall. You cannot hear anything inside the offices and it holds temp great. No loud fan, no loud kick on of the compressor, etc... Super quiet and basically invisible in the office.

A 9000 btu mini split will handle a 16x24 area all day long. The office area at this shop is 12 x 34 and is open. Ceiling is drop ceiling with R7 or something on top. Our mini split is awesome but we have only had it for about 10 months.

For the size you want, mini spit is not much more and is 100 times better, quieter, more efficient, and less space. I have the mr cool I replaced a window unit with. Replacement Wimdow unit was 600. And no heat. The split with heat was 800. I installed it but paid an AC guy 150 to shorten and bend the tubing as well as pull a vacuum on the system. It works great and can't tell it's running. The window unit was always cutting on and off as well as loud outside.

I did have to run a new 220 line from the panel but if you aren't running a heat pump, 110 is all you need and that's the same for a window unit. It looks good inside and not the all in one vent filter look like a Windi unit.
