Will this hurt my Sycamore tree?

I want to make a sitting area under my Sycamore tree’s canopy. So I’m thinking about using a garden border and putting a couple inches of small limestone pebbles covering the exposed roots. What say you?

How big/old is this sycamore? How much of the area around the tree will be covered? I would not ring the trunk with gravel out in a 12’ circle......but doing just a section might be OK. I routinely see big sycamores in odd places—adjacent to city streets, on the MS River batture, in suburban lawns....so they’re not exactly delicate once mature.

It'll be fine. Gravel is just another type of mulch. You'll want to put weed mat down before the gravel.

Should be fine without any issues. That large limestone will still allow air to reach the root and that is the most important thing. If you were to cap the area with additional dirt, it could have bad outcomes because the dirt limits the flow of oxygen to the roots.

This is my thought as well so no weed control fabric?

Wouldn't hurt putting fabric. Fabric will still allow air to get to the roots and prevent weeds. Personally, I would do the fabric just because it would prevent less weeds from coming through.

As long as you stay off the immediate area of the trunk (varies depending on size) and you don't do any compacted material. Keep it porous and a little loose and it will be fine.
