Why are my Italian cypresses dying?

Potted, only about 5' tall. I've tried less water and more water and neither one improved the situation. The leaves are brown and brittle. Any idea what it could be?

Italian cypress are susceptible to all sorts of diseases and pests in the south.

Spider mites that started last summer, probably.
