Get talstar and a backpack.

Question, I already treat my yard with Talstar granular for flees, ants, spiders and whatnot. Is this fine too for the sod worms? Or do I need the liquid to spray for this particular situation?

Liquid. You want to spray them directly.

Why is that? My understanding is most liquid spray only kills the moths so you have to continue to spray for around a month to stop the life cycle as the eggs hatch every 7 days or so?

But that a granular grub/ worm killer will kill the caterpillars so it stops them completely? Is there a spray that will kill the caterpillars?

Liquid Talstar will kill them. The issue is the life cycle. You'll have to spray multiple times to kill multiple life cycles. The reason I prefer liquid is because you apply granular and it falls to the surface of the soil. Then you water it in. Your insecticide is at soil level and not grass level.

I saw some in my grass this morning. They're tiny little green looking caterpillars. Is that them? I was amazed at how many you could see if you got up close.

So are pretty much all caterpillars bad for turf grasses?

I’ve noticed a ton of birds in areas of my yard. Went out the other day and saw a bunch of caterpillars. They aren’t the light green ones mentioned in this thread (more dark colored), and I haven’t noticed any brown spots/dead turf at this point.

Not all caterpillars are bad for the grass. Azalea caterpillars eat azaleas, monarch butterfly caterpillars eat butterfly weed, gulf fritillary caterpillars eat purple passion flower vine. However, if you have caterpillars in your grass you probably want to id the caterpillar and look for damaged grass.

Interesting to see no one mentioning Merit G (imidacloprid). You’ll have longer control in one app.

That's a great product. I always mention Talstar because you can spray your house for insects and tree/shrub/mulch for mosquitoes as well.

I ended up getting some liquid Talstar at the Feed Store in Gonzales (Bifen I/T). Sprayed the entire yard today. Thanks for the heads up!

ETA: Also, you helped me a while back with grubs. You recommended Arena, which totally worked. Thanks for all your input on this board!

What dose of Talstar are you all using against the moths? I’ve tried to hit them with it but they are back the next day. I use 1oz/gal.

I used the same, 1 oz/gal. I sprayed the grass pretty liberally with it too. Like I said, I just did it today so I don't know if it's working yet. I hope this little rain shower we just got doesn't frick it up and water down what I put down this morning.

I have treated twice with the liquid talstar that goes on with the water hose spray bottle adapter and also treated with a granular from cleggs in BR. I still have the bastards. Any ideas?

Moths or caterpillar? You’ll have to be aggressive

How aggressive? I went this morning and did a visual inspection on my yard, and while I had to look real hard, I could still see spots with caterpillars. If I was to put a percentage on it, I'd say I killed roughly 75% after the 1st spray down compared to what I saw on the visual inspection yesterday (before the treatment). Should I make another pass or should I wait?

You aren't going to be able to do anything about the moths. Focus on the caterpillars and you'll stop the moths. Also, the moths could be coming from anywhere else because they can fly. A moth flying over your yard doesn't mean it came from your yard. If you full sprayed the yard 7+ days ago you can do it again. You can also spot treat the caterpillars.

Thanks to the OP. I had never heard of these bastards before. Wish I would have known two weeks ago so I could have stopped them before they did all this damage!

Just treated yard with Bug Blaster 2.4%. I’ll come behind it in a week with a Spinosad to try and kill the moths too.

So does Talstar kill the caterpillars and the moths or just the moths? I know it doesn’t kill the eggs. The moths die by the next day after I spray, but right before Marco came in we had a lot of rain and they came back with a vengeance over about a 10 day period and have destroyed about a 20x30 section of my lawn. I threw some grub granules out to kill the caterpillars but I’m going to keep spraying I think as I still see some moths.
