What's best soil or sand to fill in bad sod job?

Had sea wall installed. Had to leave town. When I came back they had not covered the hard clay with dirt and the sod is really uneven making it very hard to mow. I have access to a tractor but sure what to fill in with. Please help.

If you just need to level use clean mason sand

I usually mix 3:1 sand to compost (black kow) but if youre just going for level hes right that mason sand is the best.

+1 mason sand.
Whatever you do, do NOT get river sand or you might have to deal with torpedo grass. And the only way to deal with it is to move.

I had the same issue over five years ago. The sod was put down right after a big rain and there were bobcat ruts all in the yard. I paid someone to level it with sand, but I still had to buy tons of masonry sand to level it more over the years.

Spinoff: I need to fill a hole near my bulkhead. It is not too big. I don't think sand or topsoil will last. What I need is mud/dirt. What can I use since I do not need a dump truck load of mud/dirt?

structural fill (red clay) would be best. Second best would be aggregate (gravel, crushed concrete or stone) with soil on top

if you get lucky you might find a pile on the side of the road or something. Or at a construction site (obviously ask permission).
otherwise call around to some materials suppliers and see if you can pick up a small load.
Dirt guys are always looking for a place to dump excess after a job (it’s already paid for and storing it costs money every time you have to move it)

Let me add something about that sea wall. I don’t know where you are or what body of water, but if that sea wall wasn’t done right, you’ll have issues. There should be some fabric and geo grid depending on wall height. But if that’s lacking, the yard will absolutely sink in spots.

It was done right. Just have an area near the bulkhead where a post was installed for a fence that needs some dirt.

The current drought and strips of dead grass remind me why you need to mix something like Black Cow or cotton bur mulch into the masons sand when leveling. Sand alone doesn't hold water. Everywhere I filled a rut is now water stressed.

I’ve had good luck with mushroom compost as well.
Was talking with a sod guy this week on a project and he uses a sand compost mix.
