I was cleaning my rental unit when I saw this behind a cook top stove. Tried to unplug it but it had two wired hardwired to it. Plug is warn to the touch.

I have one like this. It's how my keypad for my alarm system is powered. My key pad is on the backside of the wall from the plug

Yup alarm. Mine has the same one which sucks during a power outrage b/c it squeals like a pig when the battery gets low
It's hardwired to the two prongs but easy to remove FYI

24v transformer for an alarm or a doorbell.

So leave it alone right?

Is it connected to anything except the socket?
Pic looks like it's an orphan left there because it's screwed into wall plate.
Unscrew, unplug and throw away.
FWIW... "wall wart transformers wastefully " draw current" even without a load. Use switching power supplies.

My cable company installed something like that as a booster for my cable tv signal. Can’t imagine it being behind the stove, though.

Looks rather old. I suspect its an old doorbell transformer. Do you have one of those old boxy plastic doorbell chimes high on the wall in the hallway near the master bedroom?

No nothing like that. There’s no bell anywhere.

I have those in my office, they go to my alarm system that Guardian Alarm installed.

It is absolutely a step down transformer. If it doesn't have any wires coming out of it, its abandoned. If it does have wires, they're going to a thermostat or alarm system or something like that.

They literally step down the voltage by turning the voltage into heat loss, that's why they are always warm.
If there's no wires throw it away.

That’s the problem, there are two wires connected to it.
