I’m thinking of running to be a member of the board and I’m wondering what’s been the best thing other HOAs have done in your opinion? Building something? Website? Social events? Please list anything you’ve liked big or small.

Sadly absolutely nothing except go up on the dues because the board that was elected couldn't do the damn job so they had to hire a management company to run the HOA. Yes, I ran this last election and lost by 3 votes. I'll run again for the position coming up in December since the spot I lost out on was only a one year term (the previous guy had to resign since he was no longer a homeowner and merely a renter).

New board has some grandiose ideas about new playground/basketball courts and wifi at the cabana/pool. Problem is...there are no funds for that and they aren't allowing the residents to have a say so in what is wanted/needed...they just go in there with their pet projects and force the residents to pay for them. Luckily those idiots don't get paid for their time.

We are working on establishing an HOA in our neighborhood. Luckily there are only 22 houses. There have always been covenants, but we are working on putting together bylaws. One of them is that any capital expenditures over $10,000 have to be approved by a 4/5ths vote from residents to avoid them going crazy with shite like a pool, playground and clubhouse.

But if you don’t have an HOA, they don’t have dues money to do dumb crap like that.

Every time I even consider moving into to town, I read these threads.

True, but I do find HOAs to have value if you can put enough parameters and safeguards in to keep them from going off the rails.

As little as possible: I’m happy that the developers still control our HOA, otherwise everyone would be lobbying the board for their pet exceptions to the rules and favorite projects. I don’t want exceptions, I don’t need added dubious value amenities like WiFi at the playground. We want the common areas to be maintained, the rules to be applied consistently, and things to be tidy. A directory of owners is nice, and maybe a social before the annual meeting. It’s not a social club, it’s an HOA.

That’s how it starts with any gov’t style entity

I was quite happy when the developer ran our HOA. Our dues stayed the same and if you requested work orders for community items such as weed control or broken fence boards...it was done quickly and efficiency without issue. Now....I pay $50 more and I have to cross the fence to replace a board on the "HOA Fence" that adjoins my yard to the 4 lane road behind it.

Fired all the lifeguards and opened the pool for (almost) anytime hours, with a swim at your own risk policy.

Put sidewalks around every lake in the neighborhood, where only 1 was sidewalked previously.

Organizes 1 spring weekend each year for a "garage sale weekend", and markets it really well. It brings in a crap ton of buyers, and almost eliminates the solo garage sales that pop up on other weekends.

And they have done a good job keeping dues down compared to bordering neighborhoods.

ETA: accidental downvote, Hungryone. Was not intentional.

Convinced me that I need to move out of an HOA neighborhood. I can't stand the constant bickering on FB or email, I've removed myself from the email threads finally and cancelled FB all together.

I think HOAs can do some good but certainly are capable of being a nuisance. I’m on the board of our HOA and am looking to reinvigorate it. We currently don’t do much besides fight neighborhood related things at metro council.

Our dues are only $25 a year. I would like to put together some plans to buy/subsidize live oaks in people yards, build sidewalks etc or help sponsor a brec Park. Our neighborhood is off highland and older.

Yeah...see that's USEFUL stuff there. Our HOA board turned their nose up at me when I requested they send someone to a HOA meeting of ALL HOAs where I live. Our city council woman is a socialist. She follows Bernie Sanders religiously. That's the only group she'll listen to.

Its already set up, the developer just wants to pass it off to the residents now.

ETA: we also have some people who aren't in compliance with the covenants (things like pouring the sidewalk once you finish your house) so having a way to enforce those will be nice.

OK, seeing where you are, and what's kinda close to you, I can see doing it.

Install security cameras at entrances, make sure neutral areas are landscaped well, update neighborhood signage, request road repairs in a timely manner. Basically keep the neighborhood looking good and safe, but you don’t need to police what people do with their houses
