I recently had 1/2 + cleared and need to plant some
type of grass/groundcover seed. I know it's wrong time of year but need to do something and I plan on replanting in the spring. I'm thinking about Bahia, it's tough grass that's durable and low maintenance.
Location is Folsom. Any thought's??

If you plan to replant with a more desirable grass next spring, I’d plant annual or perennial ryegrass that will die naturally in our climate when it gets hot in late spring. If you plant Bahiagrass you’ll be fighting that as a perennial grassy weed from now on, and you’ll be back on this board asking for advice on how to get rid of it. It’s getting close to the time where rye grass can be planted.

ETA: OP are you thinking about planting Bahia this fall as a temporary grass cover or next spring as a “permanent” grass?

I have St Augustine grass closer to the house and cleared land about 50 feet off the house and back to the edge of my property. I was told by local guys to throw Rye down in Oct. Just FYI, Middle Ga here.

I was wondering, what would you guys think the strategy should be in the spring? I want some decent grass to replace the Rye but I do not want it to overtake or compete with the St. Aug.... any recs here?

I was going to plan the Bahia now, but I'm having second thoughts hence the post.

Do you have to cut the rye grass over the winter or will it not grow much?

I’m in a similar situation as OP. Had dirtwork done and would like to put something down in the mean time. Was considering hydroseeding but feel it might be too late in season.

How big of an area? Why not continue just continue with St Aug as you have next to your house, of course you’ll need sod. Or are you looking for a cheaper option?

Well if you have sufficient sunlight (no heavy shade) I would think Bermudagrass seed would be a good, cheap, option. Others can suggest varieties of Bermudagrass to consider and there is always common Bermudagrass. And over time (years) if you cut your St Aug around your house high as recommended, it will run and likely overtake/crowd out the Bermudagrass.

Do NOT plant Bahia. I have it in my back yard as what the previous owner put down. It's anything but low maintenance. It's more than tough...hell on my lawn mower. Not to mention it's damn near fully regrown by the time I finish cutting my grass...Okay, that an exaggeration, but really, by the following morning it has grown a lot.

Yes you’ll likely have to cut the rye grass to keep the lawn looking neat. Annual ryegrass will grow taller/faster than perennial ryegrass (more expensive seed) but both will die in the heat of south LA summers. Prob better to hydro seed with a desirable lawn grass seed next spring
