Well you can fix it up and move your girlfirend into it.

You'll have some control over who your neighbors are. And if in a decent area, profit in the long run. Especially on a foreclosure if you're any kind of DIY type.

We had an empty house next to ours for a while.

The best one of those I’ve seen is where a suburban subdivision house burned to the slab. Neighbor bought the lot, removed the debris, put a nice iron fence around it, and landscaped a hell of a nice garden area that also gave him more distance/buffer from neighbors.

shite you're not gonna get a better opportunity to flip some real estate. It's right next door so you can walk over and monitor whatever work is being done. Depending on where you live you could make it a rental property rather than sell and make some passive income.
