Discovered a wet spot on my ceiling tonight. Pretty small 4”x1”. Went into the attic and didn’t see anything that appears to be leaking and we didn’t get rain today. Also never saw it during all the rain last week so I’m confused as to what may be causing it.

Any ideas? TIA

Admin if this is the wrong board, I apologize.

No it’s not. Above the spot in the attic is the insulation “saw dust” type material. Not sure what you call it.

You need to go to that exact spot in the attic and see if you see any water. Finding the source of the wet spot on your ceiling should be fairly easy

Water spots on ceilings either come from a leak in the roof from rain or from drainage pipe from your ac. Only other option is if a bathroom is nearby on 2nd story above the ceiling you are looking at.

No other possibilities

I went into the attic and saw nothing that’s damp. No sign of water running down 2x4’s or pipes. No wet spot on insulation.

Could it possibly just be a condensation issue?

I've had condensation issues like that in my garage.

We got rain every single day for the past 2 weeks almost and this spot wasn’t there.

Is in a different part of the attic.

The spot is on the second story just outside of the bathroom. But no pipes are in the attic where the spot is.

Any chance someone/something threw or shot water upwards onto the ceiling?

Do you know of that register sweats when the a/c has been running for a while?

I’ve never noticed it when in the room but it’s always possible. I did just google and saw that wet spots near a register can be caused by condensation.

Mine came from the chimney cap becoming unseated due to wind. Guy came out and showed me where the water was trickling down the pipe. Before that it was hard to tell where it was coming from. I put some dog potty pads down over the top of it and checked it from time to time and that also prevented further damage until we figured it out. Pretty expensive to fix because they had to fabricate a new one and install it. Then I just painted the spot on the ceiling.

Our chimney is not near this spot. Good info though.
