Heyward is the Ryobi of pool equipment. Just a notch better then Harbor Freight but is OK.
Problem is it is everywhere. Moving up to Jandy or Pentairs of the world is a big leap cash wise.

- go to troublefreepool and read up on the latest there. those grumpy old white men know their shite.
Great info here everyone!
I am about a month or two out from my pool install and currently going with chlorine (autochlorinator system) for no other reason than my pool builder's suggestion. After reading the forums and PoolSchool on troublefreepool (TFP), the site's experts overwhelmingly recommend salt (salt water chlorine generator) due to issues with CYA levels eventually getting so high to maintain free chlorine levels that you have to drain the pool. Is this an issue anyone here has actually dealt with on their chlorine systems? I'm just trying to figure out if its truly such a hassle as discussed on TFP or if its more of a manageable problem that doesn't warrant me switching from chlorine to salt system. Thanks

mine isnt old enough to know but i just cant imagine it being that big of issue.
also realize, those guys on TFP are all trying to have everything perfect. For me...so long as have a clear blue pool that is clean, swimabale and the water feels good....i dont care about other issues. So if you are one that is OCD about things, might want to ignore my advice.
i will say, i used ot have to do more in my salt water pool as far as keeping algea away. i fixed that by running it almost all the time from april-oct.
once i did that it was very similar to my current chlorine pool. once a week during the hot months, i treat. During the cold months i cut the pool run time down and only treat every other week.
I also have no trees around now or at old house. Trees change things big time.

if you get a wild hair to go with a cartridge filter vs sand filter, you might want to watch this video first.
LINK
Anyone who tells you a cartridge filter is as easy to maintain as a sand filter is smoking crack.
(CAD is just pissed that his new house has one of these stupid pentair cartridge filters after having a maintenace-free sand filter for the last 7 years and its a messy and needlessly complicated process to clean it everytime.)

i have never had a sand filter, but cartridge filter takes me about 30 min every 3 months to clean. its not hard at all.

Thanks! Good perspective and I agree on just having a clear, blue pool that is swimmable. No trees around pool location.

father has a saltwater pool, no issues with it, chairs and everything around it isn't corroding, and has saved a shite ton of money not having to buy chlorine nowadays

- you have the special tools you need?
- you have lube to regrease the various o-rings you have to take off every single time?
- you have no issues wiping all the old grease off the orings/gaskets, cleaning them thoroughly and setting them aside to dry?
- you enjoy getting down on your hands & knees with channel-locks to unscrew the drain plug on the bottom of the filter?
- you can drag those cartridges to the middle of your yard and hose all 4 down to the point you think they're clean 'enough'? ..or do you keep more special chemicals handy to clean them properly?
- you splash mud/nasty water all over yourself trying to hose down the filter housing and carts?
- when it comes time to put everything back together you get it 'all correct' the first time and don't have any issues with leaks or have to take anything apart again due to grit causing leaks?
- you happy having to replace a set of $200 cartridges every couple years?
its laughable how complicated it is to clean a cartridge filter vs. sand filter.
you literally turn a valve once every month or so and let it run for about 30 seconds and you're done. maybe after 7-8 years you swap the sand in it. that's 100% of the maintenance.
no way you can convince me these are remotely equivalent.

dont mean to be 'that guy' but a single tub of 3" chlorine tabs easily lasts the season. yep its $180 instead of $80 this year but thats not exactly a 'shite ton of money' for an entire season.

yea we already have had people do the math, you dont save money with having to replace the salt cell etc.

never had to do this

there are other ways to clean this. I only clean it once a year max

you dont use special chemicals, you spray with a nozzle, takes 3-4 min each

i know how to use a water hose to not get muddy, jesus

ummm yea i know how to use basic tools and do basic work

you literally exagerate this every single time this issue comes up. either you are completely hapless when it comes to using tools and a complete idiot when it comes to mechanical things or you are a complete drama queen about this.

the sand doesnt do as good a job either. but i mean its literally not that big of a deal but i 100% know im not gonna convince you as you are apperantly inept when it comes to using tools.
