Need to replace 2 gas water heaters located in attic. Reccomedations for businesses and brands to consider or avoid would be much appreciated. Baton Rouge.

Thanks in advance!

Did you check to see if water heaters will fit through attic stairs? I put in a wider set of attic stairs a few years back for when I have to eventually replace my water heaters.

I need to do the same and my BIL, a recently retired master plumber and who now lives out of state, will install them for me when he visits in late May. He told me to purchase Rheem (=Rudd) gas water heaters at LCR/Plumbers Warehouse on Siegen Lane (he has an account there and I can purchase them at his cost - about $550 for either 40 or 50 gal tanks). FWIW, my current tank water heaters are Rudd, and original to the house built in 1993, and I’ve never had a single issue with them, but I know I’m living on borrowed time in regards to potential leakage.

Though I can’t recommend a local installer, my next door neighbor, a retired engineer who does his homework on such matters and usually gets multiple quotes, recently had Central Plumbing install one - he purchased the water heater himself, just needed labor to install it. Though I don’t know what Central Plumbing charged him, he did tell me the first company he got an estimate from, installation only, quoted him $500 for ground level install and $1000 for attic install, per water heater.

4 or 5 years ago, I paid $1,600 for a 50 gal. Rheem water heater and installation through Lowe's or HD (don't remember which). The plumber turned out to be Central Plumbing. They came out to Ascension Parish to remove the old and install the new in my attic, and did a great job. I have a second WH that I will probably replace soon (it is 20+ years old). Next time, I will probably contract with Central Plumbing directly to make sure Lowe's or HD doesn't send someone else to do the job.

I would do whatever I could to stay on the DIY side of this.

I have heard some nightmare stories from others that the city of BR made them get a permit, install additional catwalks, and other heartache just to change out an old water heater.

If you have to pay someone see if they are strict about pulling a permit.

I have two new ones sitting in my attic that I got from LCR/Plumbers Warehouse in Metairie.

I’m not on the tankless bandwagon fir a retrofit.

They are very expensive and it is much easier to replace in kind. In a warm climate I’m not sure what the payoff on a tankless would be from just another gas due to utility savings but it’s got to be a long time.

There are gas water heaters out there that are 30+ years old. Not sure you are going to get that kind of life out of a tankless when housed in a hot LA attic it’s whole life.

I always ask plumbers whether they themselves have tankless at home and not a one has ever told me yes. That's all I need to know about that.

My cousin is a plumber and he told me to buy Bradford White water heater and he installed. Did that in 2012 and not a single issue yet. I figure no matter what brand, nowadays you're only going to get about 10 yrs out of them. The Bradford White replaced a 35 yr old water heater that was still working. I just figured I'd be proactive.
