I have an issue with red wasps congregating around my home this summer. More so than usual. They keep finding new places to nest after I kill each one. First it was the corners of our fences where it meets the neighbor's fence. Next it was under our roof soffit up above our back porch. Then it was inside of our fan/light fixture on the back porch.

I used an entire can of wasp/hornet spray, yet after the ones that I spray are dead, more return to nest. I have J&J exterminating spraying quarterly, but I guess I need to mention to them about the issue? I have two young kids that bring over 5-6 kids to play and I do NOT want anyone stung, especially if someone has an unknown allergy.

Is there anything other than constant spraying to keep these pests away? TIA

I read somewhere not to knock the nests down after killing all the wasps with spray. If there is a nest present it discourages them from building a new one. Seems to have worked well for me the last few years.

I leave them on the rails of my fence and it does work - they don’t build new nests.

They love cedar fences and soffits. Spraying at night means you get more kills. Buy the cheap 3 pack of spray at Walmart. It leaves a little mess on windows but works great and 3 bottles a year is about what I go through on a 1/2 acre lot.
I knock nests down next day so they don’t reuse but maybe hitting it with taistar and leaving it is a better idea?

Lambdastar Ultracap 9.7 is what you want. Spray it anywhere wasps nest at and your problem will be solved. I've used this for the past 5 years after receiving advice from customer service at DIY Pest Control. I had the problem you're describing and once I started spraying this two or three times a year, no more nests. This stuff seriously does work.

I use Termidor but any fipronil would work.

This is not a “knockdown” type of insecticide like a pyrethroid (lambda). It is more of a spray now and don’t worry about it again for 5-6 months.

I leave the nests up too after I kill them.

I have plenty of mud daubers around but rarely see red wasps anymore.
Does the presence of one species make the other less likely to come around to the same area?

If this is the case, I think you need to get another brand of wasp spray. I have bought a couple of brands over the past year that knocks them down, but doesn’t kill them. If you watch them, after a minute or so, they regain their bearings and fly off.

Good wasp spray should kill those on the nest as well as have some residual action.

I spray a mix of Talstar P and Bifen XTS covering everything and seems to keep the wasps and Mud Daubers away.

Go to tractor supply. Buy generic bifenthrin 7.9%

Mix 1 ounce to 1 gallon of water in pump sprayer. Spray soffits, etc. every 6 mos. Never see a wasp again.

These both contain Bifenthrin. The xts is the 25.1% oil based version. The talstar is the 7.9% water based version. You do you, but I don't think it's necessary to mix those. The 7.9 will keep them away and won't leave a residue.
