He did say adding remote ignition unit adds roughly $500 to the cost,

Or you could get an aftermarket unit for about $70 from Amazon or eBay and connect it and have a remote and smart home integration. (The $70 range is for units without a thermostat- just on and off function). I love being able to tell Alexa to turn on the fireplace. I also love having a nightly routine set to turn it off at midnight just in case someone who lives in the house goes to bed without turning it off.

Amazon link

eta: we have a switch that looks like a light switch that turns it on and off as well. Instead of wiring the smart module directly to the gas valve or transformer, I wired it into the switch. Easier access and where the switch is the smart module was easy to hide. (The switch is not in a very convenient place in my opinion, but it was there when we bought the house). Took about 10 minutes to set up. You can also do things like set a scene with controllable lights set to a “cozy” temperature and color. Tell Alexa to “make it cozy” and the lighting changes and the fire comes on. Where was this when I was a single man?

The person that waited on me said they do not recommend ventless ceramic logs in fireplace units not designed for these logs even if you close the flue - concerns with the mantle etc.

Do you have a prefab metal firebox or brick fireplace?

I have an all brick fireplace & chimney (not on outside wall) with ventless logs. I shoved a bunch of insulation into the flue to prevent any heat loss. My mantle is marble and is cool enough to touch when the fireplace is going.

Prefab metal firebox designed for a flue is a no go for converting to ventless.

What exactly did you use? Someone told me they used steel wool, but I haven't researched it to see what's best and safe.

Pre-Fab metal firebox with a flue - house was built in 93 so I guess whatever was “standard” at that time. Now that I think about it, I might have manual for it in a folder - I was provided manuals by the builder for a number of installed appliances in the house.

I will add this without opinion - just sharing info. Speaking with a friend in Mandeville who 10 years installed ceramic gas logs to his metal firebox with flue, which I assume are vented logs just based on the size of the flames in a photo he sent me. He closed his flue to project more heat into the house. He said his mantle (wood) did get hot, as I was told by personnel at the Woodburner Store. My friend further said this and this is a direct quote from a text he sent to me

“Remember, those flues aren’t airtight.  You still get air through them even when closed. One thing I did. When I first put them in my mantle was getting hot so I added a shield to the top of the fireplace. Blocks the heat & diverts it into the room. Cost about $25. “.

I’m not sure what this “shield” is he is referring to but I’ll find out. Is he living dangerously doing it this way I don’t know but he been using it this way for a number of years without issue or concern and he said it keeps his house toasty.

I have a gas fireplace that has the key that you turn in the wall to open the gas and we light with a firestick. Can I somehow hook this up to a remote start? We have beautiful ceramic logs already, so I don't need to invest in those. Is this even a possibility and if so, what would I need? I'd love to be able to tell Alexa to start a fire.

Unfaced fiberglass insulation.

According to the manufacturers, you'll need to change the firebox. You could try using a heat deflector like your friend suggested, but is it worth the risk?

I had the same issue and installed vented in the wood burner on the main floor and built a custom cormer cabinet with a rated ventless fire box on the lower level.

The ventless logs were turned on by a wall switch.

Pro Tip. The wall switch they sell you for $25 is just an ordinary light switch that you can buy from Lowe's for $3 or less. The logs will need to have the remote feature to run the two wires to the switch.

You would have to add an electronic gas valve to your system. The kit I linked activates the valve. We have a pilot light so the igniter piece isn’t necessary for us.

And that’s what it is called? An electronic gas valve? I’m been trying to google but not having much luck.

Then after the valve, a kit like what was posted? Thanks!

Now that, I don’t know. We bought the house and it had the gas logs already installed with a switch that looks like a light switch to turn it on and off. Honestly I don’t even know if you can retrofit the valve assembly or if you would have to buy a whole new system.
