Long story short I had a new transmission and torque converter put in our mini van. However I have a warning light still on and it turns out to be a code for the torque converter. Good news is that it is covered under the parts warranty. Bad news is that we have a family vacation to Colorado before the work can be done. The only issue is the light. We’ve taken several mid range trips and haven’t noticed any mechanical issues. My question is, should I chance it and take my van or should I eat the cost on a rental for our vacation?

Take it back to the repair shop and have them clear the code. If it comes back on then have them check it out.

It’s actually at the shop so they can get everything the parts company needs.

if the torque converter fails, you wont be able to move it anywhere, you will need a tow truck to get home.

ending your vacation before you barely get started, and paying to get towed home from Colorado, is not worth the risk. change your vacation or rent a vehicle to replace yours for the trip.

It’s a ski trip so it can’t really be changed. Looks like I’ll need to rent.

Since it's a family trip, would be best to rent.
If the trans is not slipping and the trans fluid doesn't smell off or burnt, it may be something as simple as a code or unplugged/bad sensor, but I would not want to strand the family during vacation.

No. Go drop the damn thing off at the shop and tell them to call you when it isn't broke anymore. Rent something.

Personally, and for such a long trip, I would look into a rental (even if my vehicle were perfectly good). Put the miles on the rental, not your own vehicle. Especially so right now with the doubt.

No way I would drive to Colorado with my wife and kids. You are a way better man than me.
No way in HELL I’m leaving with any potential transmission problems. Can you picture blowing your tranny in north Texas with your family in the car? There is stretches for hundreds of miles with nothing. Nothing.
Rent a van.
