More of just an annoyance right now, but starting to get a whine from the transmission. It’s a 20 year old land cruiser that has 170k on the clock.
With car in park there is no noise at all and nice smooth idle. However when I put the transmission into drive or reverse I’ll get a audible whining as I start to move. Almost like a whining drive/accessory belt. I drained and replaced the transmission fluid as well as the fluid in the transfer case, but noise is still there. The car shifts smooths and otherwise drives normal.
Thinking torque converter or perhaps a clogged transmission filter. Just wondering if anybody ran across this same kinda problem and what the cause of it was.

There’s a patch for a Toyota torque converter if you know its definitely that. Its just a bandaid but I don’t know if I would change the transmission of a 20yr old vehicle
ETA if you post on the OT there is a transmission guru LSU fan that post. Can’t remember his name but you’ll get better/more advice

Don't know where you're located, but I do know of a top notch transmission guy in N.O. on Bienville St. in Mid-City.
Been in business for well over 30 years that I know of at the same location. He's my go-to for anything transmission related.
C & O Transmission owned by Chris Oates.

I’m def leaning torque converter but the strange thing is it doesn’t get louder under acceleration and shifts butter smooth. Coming to a stop the truck will downshift smoothly and not make any noise whatsoever. However if I sit at a red light for a few seconds with truck in drive the whining noise will start. Just an odd one to pinpoint.

what year? 200 series or 100 series?

Maybe a restricted transmission filter? Read this it might help LINK. If you are in the Baton Rouge area this company can definitely diagnosis your problem - been my auto service provider for 25+ years. Don’t let it go long without diagnosis and repair - you might turn a minor (annoyance, $) problem into a major ($$$$) one pretty quickly.
Toyota’s are known for having very robust transmissions with few problems well into the 200 to 300K mile realm, assuming proper maintenance and service, so you have that in your favor. Proper service - changing transmission fluid (no flushes), replacing transmission filter, and re-torquing the transmission valve body at the time of filter replacement, usually at 50,000 mile intervals.

Very possible on the filter. I mean the shifts are smooth and there is no rattle. Time to drop the skid plate and give the filter a look. Was hoping when I changed the fluid it would have squared it away but if clogged then that’s no bueno.
I know it’s an older truck but this thing has been bullet proof. First real issue I’ve had. No plans to sell and want this thing to last another 150k lol.

I’m far from being very knowledgeable on transmissions, but are you sure it’s a transmission issue and not another component of the drive train? Sometimes other issues, even a engine running problem under load, can be mis-interpreted as a transmission issue. If you haven’t had the trans filter changed in some time, say the last 50 K miles or so, it would be good to do that anyway. The additives in new transmission fluid can sometimes “fix” torque converter/ transmission shutter but it might take a little while to start working
The link I provided to AgCo Automotive, If you’ll send the owner Louis Altazan, an email through the his website, providing as much details as you can, he will respond to you with suggestions of what the problem might be within 24 hours - he always answers every email sent to him within a day. You can even call his radio show tomorrow (Sat) morning, 10 am I think, and he and his lead tech, Brian Terry, will answer your question. He is Baton Rouge, but he receives calls to his radio program from throughout the USA and some overseas. He’ll point you in right direction of where you need to be looking to fix this issue.

There are so many things that could be making that noise in a 20 year old vehicle. When you put the engine under load shifting it into gear it could be anything in the drivetrain, FEAD, etc. With the 4.7L V8 it could also be timing belt related.

Timing belt water pump, bearings etc were all done about 10k ago.

You said here that it starts whine when you start to move. So if you put it in drive and keep your foot on the brake does it whine? And if you keep your foot on the brake hard and give it gas (torque it) does it whine? If yes to the first and no to the second it could be output shaft or u joint.
I would definitely seek out a good transmission person who is knowledgeable about that vehicle. It could be a simple fix.

quote:. Yes exactly. In park at idle nothing and smooth. As soon as I place into drive and just hold the brake like I would at a red light it starts to whine. When I let off brake and start to go it will whine for 10 seconds or so then stop.
So if you put it in drive and keep your foot on the brake does it whine?
