So I replaced a toilet flapper that was leaking. When you flush the toilet now, you have to hold the handle down a couple of seconds. If not, the flapper returns to its position and you do not get a good flush. I have tried adjusting the chain to leaving slack to no slack, it does not work.

Did I just get a lemon for a flapper? I have not had this happen in the past.

is it an adjustable one?

If not, maybe the arm isn't lifting the flapper high enough?

You need to adjust the chain attached to the flapper.

Not lifting it high enough. The water rushing down around the pointy end is what holds it up till the tank drains.

Might have to also bend the arm toward the open position of the flapper, usually the back of the tank, so that it stands up straight when opened.

Sometimes the lever where the chain attaches has a couple options. The hole at the far end of the lever will lift the flapper the highest.

Is there a float on the chain?

Depends on the flapper you have. If it is an adjustable type, it is out of adjustment. If it is non-adjustable, then the chain needs to be shortened.
