Keep them both the same temperature. That’s what I do. Someone is at the house almost 24/7.

Many great responses. In nearly every case, just set the "occupied" temperature based on a schedule. If nobody is upstairs when the kids are at school, it doesn't need to be cooled to comfort temperature all day. It just needs to start cooling in time to get it to comfort temp before people start using it. A lot of thermostats can learn this within about two weeks.
