For you folks that grow sweet potatoes in South La, when do you start your slips, and when do you put them in the ground?
Thanks!
Thanks!

My beans and cucumbers took 4 days to get to 50% germination.
The first beans happened next day. Crazy!
I did something a little different this year. In the past I used a seed mat to warm my tray but I felt like it cooked it a little too much. I added a 2nd tray this year and didn't want to buy another mat so I grabbed an old electric heater from the closet and put it in the tool room with the trays and lights.
So far I've been able to keep it in the low 80's since it has a thermostat. It I prefer it to the seed mat for sure.

Anyone have experience reusing grow bags from previous year?
I had emptied soil out into large pile and let them dry out for a couple weeks. They were all growing tomatoes & peppers.
Do i need to clean/sanitize them or are they good to go?
Some have algea growing on outside, and all of them have remnants of roots on bottom and underneath.
Pic below.

It wouldn't hurt to do a soak in a tub with a splash of bleach.
Thats what I do with my seed trays before reusing.

Has anyone been able to find yard long beans online? I can't find any anywhere in town
Are you still having trouble finding them? Or did you get some? I don’t know where you live, but Lastrapes Garden Center in Opelousas has a bunch. I just picked some up this afternoon.
ETA: agree with Balls. Hit the grow bags with a mild bleach solution just to make sure no diseases carry over.

I never sanitize mine and reuse them from season to season. I probably should though.

Only thing im worried about is disease carrying over, bcus most of them ended up with something.
Maybe I’ll do a test where i clean and sanitize a few and compare with others that weren’t sanitized.

Yeah I found some at Lowe’s actually. Only got 50% germ though so I’ll have to load back up.

Gotcha.
I picked up some yard long beans and Dasher II cucumber seeds. They were the only things I was missing. So now I’m set.

Finally dry enough here to till up for our garden at the new house. Hopefully my arms don’t shake off from the tiller and I can get the soil amendments in. Still have to decide what kind of deer fencing to put up but I have a month or so to get that in.

That’s a good thing about chickens, I don’t think I’ll ever have to till again. They head straight for the bed when I let them out.
It’ll be a bitch to try and keep them out when I plant though.
I need to work in some temp fence to keep them out and a compost pile to put that poop and bedding to work.

Why isn’t this sticky’d?

Mowed as low as possible and tilled up the garden. 65’ x 50’. Going to add lime, bone meal, epsom salt, and fertilizer tomorrow. Got some onion sets ready to go. Hands are all blistered up from the new tiller handles. That was a mistake to go without gloves for a while. Now to ponder the deer fence. Thinking of going multiple layers instead of tall. I also have to gopher proof this thing.

Dang! You put in some work! Have you had your soil tested? I’d definitely recommend it before adding a bunch of soil amendments. But it sounds like you’ll have a ton of room to grow plenty of veggies. And I’ve made that glove mistake before. I still do sometimes.
Maybe if enough people request one we’ll get it?

Did a little bit of work in the garden yesterday. Cleaned up the rows and added some soil sulfur to lower my pH. I still have a few fall/winter veggies left hanging around. A couple of cabbages and a few brussel sprouts. Btw, the hi yield soil sulfur was twice the price online. Got it at my local nursery for $7.99. I’ve seen the price anywhere between $14-$20 online for a 4 lbs bag.
Also got my first blackberry flower!
Seedlings are doing great. All have sprouted!
This morning I picked a few carrots.

Yep. Had the soil tested previously when I started our deer food plot. Nice batch of carrots!

What size plots? I got a little front tine one pawpaw gave me. The first time I used it it sucks to break up the soil. After that takes longer to pull it out than get do everything. I have 3- 4x12 beds at moment.

I can’t recommend anything because holy shite a front timer tiller will beat you to death. The 17yr old me still has back aches thinking about paw paw’s garden. Can’t you rent until you save enough for a decent one?
