Staining a front door
Posted by jflsufan

I have a guy coming to look at my front door to give me an estimate on sanding and staining. What is the going rate for this type of work?

Waiting on estimates for both painting and staining door
Will be vastly different. The sanding required to re-stain vs. paint is huge.
I'm actually building a front door right now and am still up in the air on how I'll finish. It's African Mohogany and I'd like it to be a tad bit darker, so looking at a stain prior to top coat. Would be interested in how you end up if you do end up staining.

If sanding the door requires too much labor, you could look at using a gel stain. I used gel stain when refinishing mine, and as long as I sanded the flats really well, and got most of the old stain out of the corners, the gel stain goes on much like paint and covers very well, especially if it’s the same tint or darker.
I used an old sock and rubber gloves to apply it. Was very easy to do myself. The most difficult part was that I had to keep putting the door back on hinges between tasks…. You’ll want to remove it.
It takes time and that’s probably why your estimates are coming back like they are. Or someone is trying to convince you to make a quicker job of it.
The brand was general finishes, and these are the products.

Now after talking to the guy I may go with painting the door
Yes. good painters can actually give you the wood grain look with paint that will last longer with less required maintenance.

Idk but it’s a son-of a bitch to refinish one, make sure they do it correctly.

Mahogany is usually a darker wood IIRC.
