I did not drip hot last Christmas and we woke up to cold water only.

I had a tankless installed a few months ago and it, and the recirculation pump I installed after the fact, both state they have freeze protection built in. Bout to find out I guess.

My tankless is in the attic. Pretty sure that's where my problem was.
