small engine question - Echo trimmer

hey guys, hoping someone here with some knowledge of small engines can help me out. i really like Echo brand equipment - my trimmer, blower, and chainsaw are all Echo. however, i seem to always have issues with the trimmer. i've replaced the carb a couple times now, which seems to help in the short run, but eventually the same thing always starts happening again and follows this pattern:
starts ok on choke, but doesnt want to be switched to "run". will usually sputter and die. i can usually kind of tinker with the switch, going back to choke, adding throttle, going down to like half choke, back and worth for awhile to keep it from dying. but it will still act like it wants to die. sometimes if i can get it to idle a little on half-choke, i'll let it sit for about ten minutes running like that, and it will finally let me switch to Run. sometimes it runs fine after that, sometimes it still acts like it wants to die.
sputters when i tap the head to release more line. for the life of me i cant figure why these two would be related other than just the impact is disrupting something in the engine. no idea.
it seems like it's a fuel supply issue? intake filter in the take looks fine, and is pretty new anyways. not sure what else to check from there.
none of my other Echo stuff has any similar issues. blower starts on like the second pull every time and runs like a bat out of hell within a couple minutes. same for chainsaw.

My Echo was recently running rough at anything more than half throttle or so. Bought the tune up kit from Home Depot, which included spark plug, air and fuel filters. Switched all that out and still had some issues. Turns out cleaning the spark arrestor got me back to running like new. It was all gunked up. This video goes through all the stuff I did.

Have you changed the fuel filter at the end of the fuel line in the tank? Have you changed the fuel lines? Try those if you haven't. Also make sure your spark plug is gapped properly while you are at it.

I had one do that. Replaced carb, fuel lines and filter with no change.
After many things what helped was cracking open the fuel cap a small amount.

I'd just change the spark plug and fuel filter. Probably $10 worth of stuff. If that doesn't help then possibly replace the fuel lines as well.

Check/change fuel lines (don't mix up supply and return) and check the spark arrester. Probably nothing was wrong with the carburetors and if you went with cheap off-brand replacements you probably just added to the problems.

What fuel are you using? Mine is indestructible. I bought it used for $75 and it looks like shite. I have left it outside hanging on the fence for weeks at a time. I use premixed trufuel or whatever

Try using ethanal free 91 octane fuel or tru fuel pre mix

Sounds similar to my Echo blower. Air filter looked pretty clean, but replaced it anyway. That fixed my problem.
You don't have a leaky prime bulb do you?

Have you checked the screen under the muffler. I think it is to reduce sparks but mine got caked up over the years and after I cleaned it it worked great. I just used some brake or carb cleaner spray and brass brush.

thanks for the replies everyone. i have done most of the stuff here already, but i have NOT done the spark arrestor. i'll try that tonight and see how it goes.

Use a lighter to burn out the screen spark arrestor to clean it, then clean the carb and air cleaner very well.

My echo trimmer was doing the same thing. I completely remove the spark arrestor and runs perfect now.

This.
I was about to throw my trimmer on the tree lawn when I stumbled upon a youtube video about removing the spark arrestor.
Worked like a charm.

took it off last night and she fired right up and ran like a champ. thanks for the advice all. is there any huge reason that i need to replace the spark arrestor or can i just run it without it?

You're good to go unless Biden sends his agents to inspect. The government doesn't want a spark to set the forests on fire.
Good job!

I have long since removed the spark arrestors in my equipment. I think with modern, good 2-stroke oils (Honda HP2, Amsoil Saber Pro, Echo RedArmor) that the chance of carbon build up to a point it will have sparking is pretty minimal.

shite, then they'll see i took the guards off of the trimmer, my tablesaw, and my angle grinder, that i tie the safety bar in place on my mower, and that i use an old gas can with a vent and regular spout

To be honest with you. When mine starts to do that type of thing, I chunk it in the trash can and buy another one.
Hate to admit that, but seems every thing is disposable these days.

This thread should tell you that 90% of the time it's either a free or $5 fix that takes just a few minutes.
