What are the pro's and con's of these two windows? Is the only difference the top sash can be lowered in the double hung or is there more to it? We're looking at putting in new windows and are leaning toward the single hung but want to make sure I'm not missing something. The window will tilt for easier cleaning, not sure if that effects single or double hung.

We have a few double hung and never open them. I guess it could be good if you have children you are worried about falling out.

Single hung is extremely more energy efficient. My current house (new construction) only has 6 windows that open (single hung) and they are only for fire/egress. The rest of them are picture windows.

Just replaced most of my double hung wood windows with single hung vinyl. I work for a glass shop and have ordered whole window replacements in the past and double hung is what most manufacturers were pushing at the time. I'm sure its cheaper for them to produce, but I don't see much of a point of it. Unless you just want to be able to open the top sash or for cleaning like you said.

Single hung is fine for ground levels but if you have a 2 story or higher double hung is highly recommended to make cleaning easier.

not a deciding factor, but the contacts for my home security system are on the bottom of the window, so having double hung I can sleep with the top pane down on cooler nights and still have that zone secured without having to bypass. Not that in S. LA that weather happens very often, just saying.
