Anyone know what this is? I have it on my back patio and need to replace where I took a door out. Thanks.

The style is called "Ship Lap" but not sure of the product used.

Is the material solid like Hardy Plank? I doubt it's real wood due to the heavy textured look of it.

I know I've seen vinyl siding and Hardy Plank with that heavy a wood grain texture to it.

I don't think it is solid. My guess would be a composite. I am going to take the plywood off where the old door was and look at the insides of it.

I found this online. Does it look the same to you?

Looks like standard/regular siding that you can find at HD/Lowes with a spray on. On the piece(s) that you removed, look at the cross section and see what's under it. Looks just like a coating.

That’s what I was going to say. I’d be looking at changing that out.

For a product made to be outside, it does not like water and will rot.

But it has been there for 25 years and looks fine.

Definitely Masonite siding.

That was a popular product 25 years ago. It would rot the first couple feet up from the ground where water would splash and get into the exposed edge. You won’t find that product anymore unless someone tears it off another house.

It is all under a covered patio. Basically you are telling me I need to put something over it. What would you suggest?

No. The proper way to deal with that is to remove the stuff and go back with newer, more durable siding.

That masonite product is a PITA if the paint starts peeling and needs to be prepped to paint.

My last house had flat masonite siding on the top floor and the paint was peeling in places and it is like sanding very hard cardboard when prepping to repaint.

You can still get masonite products in the "pegboard" stye for using to put metal hangers in to hold shop tools. I have several of those in my home woodworking shop.

my first thought was masonite. They quit making it about 20 years ago, due to the propensity to look like a wet phonebook after a few years. we always called that design of having a taper at the top "drop siding."

i don't think you can get it in concrete board because the main body is 3/4" thick. i know you can buy it in solid pine at a high price, but i think you can also get it in osb with the same exterior finish.

I had the same stuff def Masonite. I ripped mine off and added hardiboard siding. Was pretty easy. Looks better and I have no worries on it getting wet. I had to change it because I got careless with the pressure washer and it ripped the paint and exposed the particle board underneath. Can’t fix that
