How did y’all learn this stuff? I’m thinking of going into construction management at LSU and it doesn’t seem like they teach about actually building stuff. Thanks

Nope. More management, estimating, finance, construction process and nomenclature.

Gives you a solid oversight of the industry and tools to get in the door.

You won't become a skilled builder by graduating in CM.

Best bet, get a job with a construction crew. OJT is the best way to learn.

Started young by helping do my first roof at age 12 with one of my uncles and a couple of his kids a couple years older than me.

Worked for him on his side jobs for years and three of his 4 sons went into construction, so I worked with them all over N.O.

Then between buying fixer-upper houses and redoing them, getting into furniture building, cabinetmaking, etc. I just learned more and more. I can go from framing to final finishing.

Hands-on experience is invaluable in any line of work.

Solid major. Get a part-time construction job while you get your degree. If you actually know what you are doing in the field it will help you manage better.

Just having a lot of renovations done to your own home is experience enough.

construction management is more like a manager job not a hands on know how stuff is done hands on

sure the basic right from wrong stuff but not the skilled trade knowledge will be taught

I worked for a home builder as draftsman a couple of summers in college. And I am a landscape architect so had some structural design (mostly decks but the construction is pretty much the same as for a house) and grading/retaining wall design classes. But I had to get out in the real world and go to job sites and see how these things were being built for it all to click. Then I started buying rental property and doing my own renovations and after paying a plumber a couple of times learned how to sweat copper and do my own plumbing. And then I taught myself basic electrical wiring and now have completely rewired a couple of places.

Watching This Old House, Chip and Joanna and that dude named Mike from Canada. Taught me everything I know.

supplement building stuff with helping others with their projects, reading books and watching videos.

My dad built a lot of structures and such and is allergic to paying another human for something he (or his sons) could do.

His father was a carpenter, rough and finished, and we got to work with him a lot since he was retired my whole life.
