i just tried running my central ac unit's gas heater with my generator

for some reason the fan kicks on immediately when i plug it in and doesn't stop

any ideas? could it be a ground issue?

it's an inverter generator with clean enough power to run electronics (i actually looked at the output with an oscilloscope)

You have 2 electric motors on a HVAC gas furnace - the larger blower motor which distributes heated or cooled air through the ducts - its 220v. The other motor is a small inducer motor 110V, which vents the heated combusted natural gas products outside the house through through a vent, usually from the roof. Which one is running?

Your 100% right it’s either a ground issue or the neutral / hot are reversed. Worse case you should still be able to use the ground from the house.

I've never heard of this. Must be fairly small. Is this a small split unit?

I had an issue with my inverter trying to do that same as you. My fan wouldn't kick on though. My heater is fairly new and apparently picky about the grounding. I had to take off the panels to see the control board was showing an LED error code. The code was for "Ground not connected". I ended up running a pigtail directly to the wire in the breaker panel so I could attach the ground there. Then plugged the pigtail into a cord that ran to the generator. Not the cleanest way to do it, but I was able to heat almost 3,000 sq ft with a 2000 watt generator & gas heat.

My 5 ton gas furnace runs off of a standard 120v outlet...as well as every house I’ve ever owned

yep, the generator's neutral wasn't bonded to the ground, once i did that the unit worked perfectly
