Got quoted $920 to replace yesterday. Is that reasonable? Unit is 10 years old

it all depends on the fan motor in the unit

some variable speed regulated fan motors can cost anywhere from $300-$800 so its crazy how wide the differences can be based on the model fan motor it has.

if they gave you a detailed quote then search the model number of the fan motor and see. if they didnt show the motor then search for the motor using the unit model number. chances are you can buy it off the internet cheaper yourself then what they are buying it for and then adding anywhere from 30%-50% markup on that price.

before spending $920 on it, since its 10 yrs old and out of warranty, i would just buy a new high efficiency unit for twice that price

Please do, I had mine replaced last year under $300. Unless yours is running the Astrodome I'd get another quote.

$920 sounds ridiculous to me. It's an easy DYI project. I replaced mine about three years ago for around $100.

Here's a video showing what's involved - LINK.

I took the whole blower assembly up to the local HVAC supply store. They tested everything to make sure it was the motor. Pulled the old motor out. Put the new motor in. Made sure it worked. And only charged me for the motor.

$300 including labor, parts run about $150, labor and call out charge are the difference. For outside unit. Inside blower costs are mire expensive.

I was just quoted $1,069 for the same thing. Bought the motor on amazon and changed it myself. Spent $148.

I changed my own outside condensing unit fan motor, single stage unit (14 year old unit) a couple months ago, OEM AC voltage motor online purchase from a HVAC supply house, $130. Took about 15 minutes to change it out. But as already asked, is it the outdoor condenser fan motor or indoor air handler fan motor? Single speed AC voltage motor or EMC DC voltage variable speed motor? Big difference in the cost of the motor.
