I have/had a front lawn of st Augustine that is constantly getting ravaged by fungus and sod worms and weeds and just looks downright terrible. Should I rip it all up and herbicide it and put new centipede down now (full sun) or wait until next spring?

Centipede isn’t exactly easy to manage. It gets large patch fungus just as easily as st aug. you’ll get the same weeds. If you are looking for easy to manage I’d suggest tif 419 bermuda if you have full sun.

As an individual with centipede front and side and St Augustine backyard I agree with ronk - you’ll have the same issues with centipede. Though centipede doesn’t grow as fast and there is at least one herbicide you can use to control weeds in centipede but not St Augustine, expect the same issues you deal with now if you replace the lawn. If you are in NO your soil is more likely suitable for St Augustine as well.

My front lawn is centipede and back yard St. Aug. I wish I could replace the centipede. It can't withstand any traffic whatsoever and doesn't do a good job of withstanding the dead-of-summer heat in South LA without a lot of water.

I wish I could switch to Bermuda or Zeon Zoysia.

I'm just so sick of dealing w/ my St. Aug. When I put it down 2 years ago it was gorgeous! Now it looks like absolute crap.

actually I think some old Bermuda is what is taking over my St. Aug in one spot. I hate how it looks.

What was the zoysia species Dr. Strahan recommends?

If you have bermuda moving in that is going to be common bermuda and I agree that doesn't look good. A hybrid or improved bermuda is the way to go.

Likely common bermuda. I have some as well in backyard with St Augustine. Cutting the St Augustine high is helping to displacing/shading out the common Bermudagrass.

in Baton Rouge:

My centipede front yard is great. Put it down last year so dont know how long it will look great. It does require a lot of water and dries out quickly.

The backyyard however looks like crap. It DOES NOT hanbdle high traffic so over 1 year, the area around my backdoor has slowly turned to dirt/weeds. Combination of the mower, the dogs and the foot traffic i guess.

Is St. Aug best for high traffic? Looking to replace backyard next spring with something that can handle high traffic area. it's south facing so it gets good sunlight.

Bermuda is the best high traffic but will need 8-10 hours of sun
