Rental or purchase sand blasters

I need to get a drill pipe fence back to bare metal to prime and paint. 400’ of 3 rail 1 1/2 “ pipe welded to casing posts. 1/10 of a mile from electrical power so will need to use generator power.
Has anyone these residential sand blasters with success and are they efficient with the grit or will i break the bank on blasting material?
Any ideas other than 5 Hondurans?

You want to blast the pipe fence in place?

I would think the blasting material alone would be pretty damn costly since once it is out of the tip of the blasting gun, it's lost to the elements and not like a blasting cabinet where it could be used again and again once filtered.
Drill pipe is pretty heavy duty stuff so why down to the bare metal to prime and paint????
There's metal paint out there that is a primer, finish coat and rust inhibitor added to pretty things up-------unless you're just a bit OCD and need a pristine surface to prime and paint.

Man, I would just buy a couple of angle grinders and wire cup brushes on them to knock any scale or rust off. That will take forever to blast, but would be much faster with wire wheels.
Be sure whoever is running them wears safety glasses AND face shields.

Well Id get it down far enough to prep for prime and paint. It was primed and painted 25 yrs ago. This is a repaint project.

as posted above you’d do better with a couple of guys with wire wheels. Shouldn’t take long at all. If it’s 25 year old paint you should be ok (no lead) but wear masks
much easier than dragging out a blaster and bags of sand and you won’t be making such a mess. Consider that you won’t know how much sand you’ll need till you get started

Get an abrasive nozzle for a pressure washer. Rent pressure washer.
Abrasive will be the biggest problem. I would get a load of masonry sand and just use that as the abrasive. Commercial abrasives don’t really disappear into the landscape and may need to be removed.
It goes pretty quick and is very satisfying to see the bare metal. The bare metal will flash rust almost immediately.

How does that work ?
How does the abrasive get in the water stream? The pump can handle grit?

i woudl get a sand blaster and some media and roll with it! i don't know how much coverage you get from it but you don't want to be wire wheeling that much fence, no matter how many hondurans you have.
assuming you have a generator and air compressor already, a blaster is probably $150. And media is $12/50#.

Special nozzle that goes on the tip of the gun. So after the pump.
Nozzle has a pickup tube that goes into the abrasive. Venturi effect or some kind of magic sucks the abrasive into the tip.
You will use a shite ton of sand. Biggest problem is if the abrasive is not uniform. I used play sand and had to screen every bag or the little pebbles would block the tip. Hopefully masonry sand doesn’t have that problem.

Don’t use sand, use blast media. Sand can kill ya with the silica.

how rusted is it ?
I would do the angle grinder and just hit the bad ones and get some eastwood rust encapsulating paint and be done.

I wiped my pipe fence with Ospho before painting. Ospho converts the rust from iron oxide to iron phosphate which acts as a primer coat for rusted metal. You don't need to blast off all of the paint. You simply need to convert any rust exposed, and knock off all the loose paint. Home Depot has a similar product to the ospho brand. This is what I used. Same thing different name. I prepped and painted a little more than 2,000 linear feet of pipe around my property a couple of years ago.
Step 1, pressure wash all of the fence. Get as close as you can to the metal to knock off all the loose rust and paint as you can.
Step 2, I used a pump sprayer to spray the metal down with Ospho the night before I painted. You don't need to do anything else after spraying it. Just spray and wait a day.
Step 3, The day after you apply ospho, knock any loose oshpo off with a wire brush or just by brushing it with sand paper.
Step 4, Get after the painting. I used PPG epoxy primer and paint. I used a roller to apply. It's been 2 years now and the only places I notice any wear at all is where I have brushed the pipe with a lawn mower. It's expensive and requires an understanding on how to mix and thin, but it grips and ages way better than any other paint.

What made you choose the PPG.
And my closest hose water connection is 600’ from the fence. Id have to fab a portable water source.
Rust really isnt bad. Just scale, lichen, paint deterioration.

That is a lot of hose. I think my furthest post from a water spigot was about 500' but fortunately I have a ton of water hoses that I chained together. You might be able to ask a few neighbors to borrow their hoses for a weekend.
One of my former neighbors is a PPG sales rep. He gave me a really good deal on the epoxy paint. I think I still paid $1,600 for a couple of 5 gallon kits (20 gallons of material). He knows his stuff when it comes to paint and he said it's more work and prep up front, but you shouldn't have to worry about it for at least 10-15 years. He added additional dye coloring to the paint to give it extra life. You can request that PPG add more dyes and if you ultimately decide to go with PPG, chime in here and I'll let you know exactly how much of each part he added.
In all reality, the brand of paint probably doesn't move the needle much. I'm sure Behr and Sherwin Williams products are pretty comparable. I've also seen some other brands I've never heard of. Might do some googleing if you go a lesser known brand.

400' with wire wheels? Are you serious. Sandblasting is way faster. I have a new clemco bucket blaster i will sell you brand new. Comes with a cart that way you can move it around. Blast media isn't that expensive

400’ times 3 rails plus post.
