The last 2 I owned have been complete shite. The Sears model wore down the deck riase/lower notch on the front wheel meaning it would drop to 0 as soon as i started mowing burning the yard. Mower was effectively useless at that point and I tried 15 ways to Sunday to figure out a way to run a bolt through this but the clearance between the setting and the wheel was too tight so this effectively went on the trash heap.
enter my troy-bilt w/ the B&S engine. COMPLETELY different design. Guess what happened? Some screws underneath THAT WERE SELF TAPPING fell out and again the front of my mower dropped to the ground burning my lawn.
what is up with using plastic up front? planned obsolescence? so i bought slightly larger self-tapping screws and replaced the ones that i lost which lasted..about 4 more mows.
i just drilled it out and put a bolt all the way through it but i'm DONE with this mower.
i just want a reasonably priced self-propelled mulching mower that will last 5 years. is that so difficult?
what do you recommend?
eta i should point out my yard is ASSHOE and 99% slanted meaning i do put alot of stress on mowers since there's nothing level so the mower is always mowing sideways at an angle or going up & down the hill. but if my slow fat 50yo+ body can handle the yard i expect my mower to be able to hang with me.

Get a commercial grade 30 or 36, now is a great time to find used as well.

thats a great looking mower but i will never ever EVER use the bagging feature. i wish they would make this for mulching only. i hate to pay for all the attachment for bagging when they'll gather dust in my garage next to the sears and the troy-built bags.
i mow well over an acre with this thing and a walk-behind is out of the question because of all the cutting in required. Plus I don't mind that it takes 3 hours to cut because I need the exercise.
other than that i'm loving the rear wheel direct-drive gears and the simply, metal front gearing
Thats all you need. Just a solid metal frame.
eta here we go. looks like what i'm wanting is about $100 more but its geared more hilly terrain and no bagging apparatus.
NINJA Series

I’ve got a Troy Bilt with a Honda engine going on 5 yrs with zero issues. Besides mowing it gets a lot of use bagging leaves. My 18 yr old son is pretty rough on it too

This could be my story except Toro.
Great Toro with Honda engine. Using it these days for mulching leaves that I dump into our compost.

If you mulch and don't care that you can see clippings, get a Toro with large rear wheels.
If you bag or you mulch and care how it looks after, get the Honda with the largest engine you can find.

Get one of these. You propel it yourself, therefore it's self propelled.

Your worst post, ever.
Sadly, not even close.
It was pretty dumb though, wasn't it? I'll admit, in my head, not so much. Reading it? Yeah. Dumb. I'll leave it, though.

Same here. I need to get a new blade for it but other than than that it's just been add gas or oil every so often. I sometimes spray it down with a hose after. I don't really care for it well and it still keeps kickin

Personally, I wouldn't think one of those would EVER be a good idea. Who has time to mow basically every other day? Not me.

my grandfather had a bladed mower like that. i pulled it out one time and made it about 20 feet
put it back up and left with a great deal of admiration for my grandfather.

Want to buy either of these? Hustler Dash 34" one year old and a Craftsman with a Honda engine self propelled which is a few years old. I'm moving to a tiny apartment in California soon and obviously don't need them anymore. Both run flawlessly. The Hustler also comes with the mulching kit.

I have a Toro recycler that is going on 10-12 years and still running. Change the blade and oil once a year and run the gas out of the carburetor every time and you won’t have any issues.
