Extending my current beds DIY, and want to make sure I’m doing it correctly. What sort of dirt/topsoil should I be using to form the base and build up to plant? I have a small tree I’m moving also, so am I good to go ahead and put that in the ground once I cut the sod, or does it need to be built up a little bit before planting?

Might be dumb questions, but it’s not a cheap project so want to make sure I’m doing it correctly. I’ll be planting some Japanese yew, shi shi, and holly of some sort, but not positive yet.

I did same thing when I moved in to my current home a few years ago. Call a local nursery and ask them what they’d recommend for your application and then get the price per yard and delivery fee. I’ve had landscapers list it as mixed soil.

Good luck. Be sure to take some before and after pictures.

If you are digging a trench around the bed, throwing that dirt into the bed, use straight mulch. Till that in.

Here is what I’ve done in the past and it has worked fairly well.

We have a heavy clay soil here so take that how you need to based on your soil type.

Spray the grass down a few days prior with round up

When the grass is dead or dying I would till up the area well. I would then start adding amendments to the tilled area.

I used a decent amount of peat moss to help break up the clay. Not much sand here so I would add several bags of sand to help with holding water. Then I would add several bags of black cow manure and also top soil.

I’d take that all level and till it all up to mix well.

The best flower beds for weeds, I’d wait a week and spray it with round up again and then plant the next day. Then mulch.
