My family and I have decided that we're most likely going to move in around 8 years when my youngest [hopefully] graduates from college. If you knew you were moving in this timeframe, is there anything you'd do to prepare?
"If you want to hear God laugh, tell him your plans." Especially for 8 years out.

I'm not a hoarder but a bit of a pack rat. I decided that I'd had enough and started going through boxes in closets and throwing stuff away.
I found a credit card receipt from 1991

Just a somewhat related comment- I have known many people who have bought a lot. None of them have ever built or lived on the lot. So much changes.

I’ve done this twice. Also lived in three houses since 2016. Moving sucks arse but it doesn’t require years of planning. We bought our current house and didn’t even have the one we were living in listed. And we have a ton of shite to move.
My only advice is to find the best movers you can and not the cheapest. If your wife likes her lamp shades, pack those in your own vehicle.

I'm thinking that I probably need to be selling larger items that aren't frequently used,

I found a credit card receipt from 1991 . I'd forgotten how good it was for gas to cost $0.96. I kept that one just for nostalgia
During the previous administration I looked back, $1.69/gallon.
