Good looking door.

*Slight hijack*

BBVDD,

Where do you get your hardwoods in the Memphis area? Most of mine comes from the woodwork shop or Craigslist, but I have been on the lookout for a cheaper or at least a larger selection. TIA

Acadian Hardwoods, out of Little Rock, delivers there. That's typically where I get my wood, I'm in central MS. Do not try to get anything out of the Ponchatoula location though.

Any opinions on woodworking without a table saw?

I have made quite a few projects already, using mostly a miter saw and pocket holes.

I recently bought a track saw and have just started my first built-ins project. I know that a table saw would make some things easier, but I’m hoping to get by without it until/if I get a bigger shop.

I would use a router for dados and rebates/rabbets.

Would appreciate some thoughts on this.

TIA

The Europeans use a bandsaw instead of a table saw.
A track saw and bandsaw will get the job done, get good with a hand plane to smooth things up.

I've been making some stuff. I think I'm a fair woodworker. I rarely use complex joinery. Here are a few projects.

it can be really nice to have a nice cabinet saw, or even a big slider, buy you can do a hell of a lot with a track saw. I recently did a big dining table out of 8/4 walnut, and it was nice to just grab the festool and 8' track to true up an edge, vs moving that big bastard around to run it on the slider. If you are having to bust out a bunch of bulkheads, it can be really nice to set a fence and repeat cuts, but if you aren't cutting parts for a big kitchen or something, a slider is totally sufficient. Which tracksaw do you have? If you have festool equipment, the MFT table is really nice to have, and can speed things up.

A good track saw works great, but there is a big BUT. The biggest problem comes when marking your lumber. To help, mark your tape and transfer the mark to the other side.

One does NOT need a $500+ table saw. I use a old Craftmen that I bought will over 25 years ago and paid less then $100. It's on it's last leg due to things getting out of square, but I know how it cuts and can true things up.

Shop Craigslist and just buy a bench top saw.

I did get the door hung this morning. Kind of hard doing that by yourself. Using door shims is the ticket to line everything up square.

This is the mortise hole for the lock.

First installing the hinges and then setting up the door and shim it into place, I marked the door frame to match the door with the hinges. Chiseled out the door frame area and screwed the hinges.

The door is dragging just a hair. Will fix that tomorrow and also install the door blocking on the outside frame. Had to call it a day. Dam back is still hurting.

Word on the street is they shutdown the mill in Ponchatoula and are closing up shop, selling whatever they have in stock.

Something about taxes, but I dont know and Im not asking.

There really isn't anyplace anymore other than the Woodwork Shop.

Well, there is a place one Johnson Ave behind Slater Millworks (I can not remember the name of the place) but you can call them and tell them what you want and they'll get it for you if they have it.

You do not get to pick it out and it's just rough, but they're cheap.

I'll try to find the name and number

Y'all guys looking for good hardwood.

Join this web site.

LINK

There are sawers that do dry and sell some of their lumber. There are people from all over the country that post there. Hope that helps. If you contact someone, just tell them Fishfight sent you. Don't know if that will get you a better price.

I bought the new Kreg. It’s been great, but Fishfighters BUT below is right on the mark. I cut two cabinet sides and I’m sure they are 99.999999% the same, but I don’t have the same confidence I would with a fence. I will probably get Kregs version of the MFT to alleviate that concern.

Thanks for the input, guys.

You can find a used job site saw for $150. They don't take up much room at all.

Finished installing that door.

First was to install some 1 1/4"x 1/4" strips to block the door from a out swing and having the door flush with the inside of the room door frame. One can see that strip in the next picture.

Installing the lock system. Then putting some lip stick on the latches.

Closing the door, striking the dead bolt against the door frame to mark my spots. See the pink?

Then was time to line up the strike plate and mark the area.

Once that is done, chisel time.

All done. Outside

Inside and flush/squared in.
