Have an acre field that we are going to disc up and plant watermelons , a project for the neighbors 12 year old boys, it is out in the country in SW Mississippi and told em we would help but they work , they sell the melons on the side of the road and they could make some money. Had a soil sample already done and ph is good, needs a little Nitrogen and potash, our current plan is to stagger planting rows by a week to extend the season, going to try plastic on one row to see if it helps, going to plant a few varieties, a few sugar babies , and mostly jubilee, black diamond and Georgia rattlesnake, we are wide open for suggestions and education

Varmint traps. Skunks, coyotes, and raccoons will eat them around the time they get ripe. Deer will eat the vines and leaves. I suggest putting up a 3 strand electric fence.

We planted 3 acres of watermelons two years ago out in the country of SW MS as well. We literally picked only 4 watermelons. Deer, coons etc got the rest.

I’ve had birds peck the little melons as well. Once coyotes get started they’ll wipe the whole patch.

Out of curiosity, why did you decide watermelons? Why not a traditional salsa type of garden? Certainly don't want to discourage you from helping some kids get into gardening, but it seems like watermelons are pretty difficult to grow with any success. And you'd broaden your buyer pool with a bigger selection of vegetables.

How are production farmers successful with watermelons?

was just kind of one of those things, we must of eaten 40 watermelons last year and most were bought or given to us by local farmers, seems this area is pretty good for growing melons (only about 15 miles north of Washington parish), one of the boys fathers have had success with a small patch of melons in the past, so just campfire talk and it took legs, we are going to give it a try, definitely concerned about critters and will be proactive in our approach, we just ended a very successful trapping season, but there are still plenty critters out there

I’d put down some metalochlor (Dual) or similar to try and hold the grass back. AgCenter veggie book. Good luck.

Chicken shite, lots and lots of chicken shite. Had a friend with 25 acres that planted about 4 of them in melons one year when he was in Loranger.

He contacted a friend who owned a chicken farm at the time and had him send over tanker trucks with the spray attachments to come and spray his turned soil a couple times a few weeks prior to planting his melon seeds.

He had LOTS of melons when it came time to harvest.
