Painted vs Sacked Brick

I was reading the thread on painted brick. Lot of people saying too much maintenance, what about ‘sacked’ brick. My wife really likes the look, does it add any maintenance or have any other cons?

From what I’ve seen if water runs down it for awhile it will fade. Gutters can help that of course. We had that option in our new home and opted for a classic more traditional all brick look. Wanted low maintenance.

I have a brick archway in my house that is sacked and I love it. Really like the look. But have no idea how it would hold up or what maintenance would be involved in having outdoors.

Not really anymore maintenance, but it will fade some over time from weather. For my current house build we went with a thick mortar line with no finger groove. Kinda gives it a light sack in the process and very happy with it. I had a neighbor that sacked his whole house and ended up hating it, so he painted it. Just have to be careful with sacking. If the crew doesn't do it all in 1 shot, it just seems like it never really matches up.

When I bricked my fireplace I had them sack it. I love the way it looks. I feel painted brick is more of a fad, but unless you sandblast your house your stuck with it.

I’ve got wide mortar joints with sacked brick. Love the look
No maintenance required, looks new 4 years later

I'm was looking at painting the brick but have been checking into staining it now...
at this point I'm not sure what I'm going to do...

Was it my thread you were reading?
We did the chimney out of necessity(really liked it) and we were about to do the rest of the house, but put it on pause post hurricane. We had some roof damage and are just waiting to see how it plays out. We are likely doing the whole house regardless.
Painting is cheaper, but washing a brick house looks better imo.

We decided to spend the extra money for a mortar wash and are very happy with it. We went from this:

I really like the wide mortar joint

Getting ready to start our build within a few weeks and decided to go with the wide mortar. Gives it an old look.

I do too, it looks really good in person. We spent WAY more time looking at bricks and different combos of colors than I thought….it came really nice
